Elections shock: Bennett out, Taylor in

YUSU Election
YUSU Elections
Tuesday, 19th February 2008
Ryan Bennett has pulled out of the YUSU presidential race, whilst Dan Taylor has announced he will stand as Services and Finance Officer.

Ryan Bennett, former Vanbrugh chair, has announced he won't run for YUSU President in the upcoming elections, telling The Yorker: "I've been thinking long and hard for quite a few weeks, and have weighed everything up and decided I won't run."

He lists two main reasons, the first being that he wants to leave university on a high: "Everything I've done has been great fun." The second reason is: "I was never that highly political, I was all about organising fun activities for students, the thing that matters."

He admitted that whilst "the SU do a lot of work" he felt that the election campaign was too "smarmy" and he wasn't in it to "make friends with people I don't like, or to go to parties just to show my face. I've decided I don't like that".

Bennett announced he'll be supporting other candidates but said his job in London would be offering him, "something a little bit different".

Dan Taylor, the student involved in the incident which led to Grace Fletcher-Hackwood being no-confidenced, has announced that he will run for Services and Finance Officer.

Taylor said he plans to compete against current Officer, Matt Burton, who he claims is running for an unprecedented second term. "I think that someone should contest Matt Burton in such an important position."

He did however admit that he is "in it to win it, not just to run against him" and is "looking forward to the campaign".

Taylor said he plans to "give him a good run for his money".

Full nominations will be announced on Monday, Week 8.
