Taylor drops out of race

Dan Taylor
Dan Taylor
Saturday, 23rd February 2008
Dan Taylor has dropped out of the sabbatical elections in which he was set to run as Services and Finance.

Taylor, a second year History student has told The Yorker he was only planning on running as he felt Matt Burton, current Services and Finance, would be "bad for university democracy".

"My original reason for running was because Matt Burton was uncontested and I saw this as being bad for university democracy and would have made any Burton victory pretty meaningless. There is now another candidate in the hat so the position will be contested."

Quote My original reason for running was because Matt Burton was uncontested Quote
Dan Taylor

He added that he did not have enough time to dedicate to any campaigning: "An election campaign also takes up a lot of time and effort and I would not have wanted to run half-heartedly. If I was running, I would be in it to win it, but for reasons of time, I felt this could not be achieved."

As a second year Taylor could still run next year, something he said he would "certainly not rule out".

As for who he supports, Taylor said: "I will not be offering my support to either of the candidates but wish them the greatest success in their campaigns."

Latest reports suggest that the position will now be between Burton and Nick Bradley, ex-James College Vice Chair, although a list of candidates will be revealed on Monday at noon on The Yorker.

"Someone to give students the chance again to vote on NUS affiliation" - Why, was there something wrong with the way the first referendum was organised?

With every post, Dan Taylor appears to become more messianic than the last. Why not make him PM? Maybe, just maybe, that's what the country needs.

Or, more likely, the country and the uni do not need someone who is forever on a moral crusade against things he clearly doesn't fully comprehend.

Rather than give democracy a nudge in the right direction by putting himself forward, Taylor nearly knocked democracy out of the window: I know that myself, and many others, would have voted for Burton just to quench Dan Taylor's misguided quest for power.

"Assumptions are very dangerous to make. [...] Don't say things when they are not true."

"Someone to make it [...] more representative of the forgotten majority and not the over-vocal minority of politically leftist students."

Since you're such an advocate of not making things up or assuming things, can you please provide trustworthy statistics on the breakdown of political beliefs of the members of this university?

Even looking at the (admittedly very rough) statistics on Facebook for the 40% of York students who have listed a political belief reveals that there is over a 300% majority of "leftist" beliefs over conservative ones:

Honestly, your arguments have more holes than Soho.

Dan Taylor's dropped out of the race?

That's a shame - considering his history of fights, I thought it would've been really funny to see him get fired for punching someone. Oh well.

"Maybe YUSU did need something like me in it...Maybe, just maybe that is what YUSU needs."

YUSU needs someone to conduct witch-hunts against other students? YUSU needs someone who prefers to pick fights than to do a job? Really, Dan?

"Someone to make it more accountable" - in what sense would Dan Taylor have made YUSU more accountable? Really, truly - I'd very much like to know how, because neither his platform of paper candidate rival nor his past behaviour indicate that he'd make the organisation more accountable.

"someone to run sound finances, make savings and propose realistic ideas on a student bar ON campus" - hasn't Matt Burton already done all of those? Leaving aside the castle in the air of the venue-in-town, isn't Burton supposed to have increased YUSU revenue several times over? Who does Taylor seriously think he's trying to fool - does he seriously think people would go not to Burton, who (say what else you like about him) has the experience and the proof of running sound finances, but to Taylor, who has never so much as budgeted a child's piggy-bank?

"not empty lies to sway students or unprofessional conduct at hustings." - because what the students need are...empty lies and aggressive conduct all the live-long day.

Taylor should really stop posting here, you know. The article makes him look bad enough, but his additions make 'delusional' look increasingly tame in defining him.
