Exam frauds avoid prison

York Crown Court 2
York Crown Court
Sunday, 2nd March 2008
The sentence of two university cheats has been passed at York Crown Court.

Jerome Drean and Elnar Askerov, who pleaded guilty of defrauding the university in January, walk away with a suspended jail sentence and 300 hours of community service.

In exchange for generous payment, in the space of one year, Drean has sat exams on behalf of Askerov.

Judge Stephen Ashurst passed comment on the issue in his summing up, and said the issue was offensive to students who had worked for their qualifications.

The two have been sentenced to nine-months prison time, however this has been suspended for 12 months on the condition that both men carry out 300 hours community service.

They risk ending up in custody again if they are involved in further offences in the future.

The £20,000 payment made to Drean by Askerov has been confiscated by the court as part of the sentence.

Askerov and Drean must also jointly cover the costs of the prosecution, which stand at £2,720.

Askerov's actions have been put down to the stress of feeling the need to to achieve highly and Drean's medical conditions may have influenced his decision-making.
