A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
As reported on The Yorker two weeks ago, JCRC Chairs contacted the university to voice their anger over a variety of issues. They said: "There is a clear disparity between what is offered to prospective students and what is provided."
There is a clear disparity between what is offered to prospective students and what is provided.
Keith Lilley, Director of Facilites Management, has replied and updated Chairs as to the progress of Bridge Development and progression of campus development.
Lilley has informed Chairs that the development of the Library bridge will take up to 2 years: "We will be looking to refurbish the Library bridge, in line with the investment in the Chemistry bridge last summer, in the next two years."
He said: "The Alcuin-Langwith bridge will be removed in the next month once highways permissions have been received. This change will be inconvenient for some staff and students, however the other two bridges are better located and both are DDA compliant, Langwith was not."
The letter also updated Chairs as to further developments on campus including: "The possibility of providing steps which align with a traffic island close to the current Alcuin/Langwith location is being invested."
He also announced that the position of Vanbrugh-Goodricke Bridge will "alter slightly in order to link the Vanbrugh Piazza with the Goodricke Peninsula". The designs for this change will be revealed within two months.
Lilley took the opportunity to tell the group that: "Since I joined the university two years ago my department has been instrumental in investing approximately £2.5m to improve the Infrastructure of the old CLASP Colleges."
He adds that refurbishment will be scheduled for Derwent and Langwith E and F blocks over the Summer break.
The Chairs are yet to decide whether to respond.
I can confirm that this JCR Chair is currently drafting a letter of response to some of the statements made by Keith Lilley - not included above - which pertain to communication difficulties. Most people will have found out through this article about the plans for the bridges, and that, frankly, doesn't make Facilities Management look very credible.
Concerns over communication have also been raised by myself to the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Students, Jane Grenville who welcomed our comments and is looking at how we can solve the problems. Progress is definately being made.
DDA compliant they may be, but don't disabled students have to go and get keys from department/college receptions to use the lifts? Surely implementing a swipe card system would be a lot more convenient.
The bridge lifts are on a number code pad.
The details on the plans for the bridges are on Yorkextra and have been since 28th Feb.
