UGM Results

YUSU
Saturday, 8th March 2008
With election-fever in full swing, the Union General Meeting (UGM) almost fell under the radar. All but one motion passed, the full results are here.

All motions met quoracy, with only the motion to change the Diversity and Equality Officers failing.

The motion by Matt Burton which asked whether "YUSU Should Take Over Langwith Bar And Open The First Students' Union Bar On Campus" passed with 603 votes for, 41 against and 29 voters abstaining.

Matt Burton said: "I'm delighted that students have mandated the Union to follow my dream of a YUSU-run bar on campus."

Burton's other policy, to buy a set of golden ducks to become the first Your:Duck also passed, with 566 votes. He said: "I'm also looking forward to following my mandate of photographing the new Trevor and I can't wait to see him swimming away in his new home."

A motion proposed by Michael Rutherford, which aimed to replace all the Current Equality And Diversity Officers (including Women's, Disability and Racial Equality) with an Anti-Discrimination Officer, failed, with just 129 votes for and 440 against.

YUSU President Anne-Marie Canning said she was "pleased" that the motion had reached quoracy and failed to pass, and commented that YUSU was committed to fighting all kinds of discrimination, supported by the hard work of the various Diversity & Equality Officers.

The biggest turnout for voters was for the "Protect The Bridges On Campus And Improve Access Routes For All" motion. Proposed by Anne-Marie Canning, the motion passed with 705 votes for, and just 15 against, with 12 voters abstaining.

Societies and Communications Officer Sam Bayley said: "The Union has been given a clear direction on quite a number of important issues - everything from banking to Hes East sustainability to NUS delegates."

He added: "We'll now do our best to get the wheels rolling on all of these motions before the end of our sabbatical year in July."

The motions which passed were:

  • Change the EGM Procedure
  • Re-forming Communications Committee
  • YUSU should take over Langwith Bar and open the first Students' Union Bar on Campus
  • Reducing the Cost of a Year in Industry
  • Make your Delegates vote the way you want them to at NUS Conference!
  • Support the NUS Governance Review
  • Protect the Bridges on Campus and improve access routes for all
  • Ensuring an Environmentally Sustainable Heslington East
  • Sustainable Banking - Keep the oil in the soil
  • YUSU should purchase a new Trevor the Golden Duck

I'm delighted York students voted to keep the Liberation Officers - and by a huge majority.

I would also like to congratulate those that were elected last night and wish them all the best this coming year.
