A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
All motions met quoracy, with only the motion to change the Diversity and Equality Officers failing.
The motion by Matt Burton which asked whether "YUSU Should Take Over Langwith Bar And Open The First Students' Union Bar On Campus" passed with 603 votes for, 41 against and 29 voters abstaining.
Matt Burton said: "I'm delighted that students have mandated the Union to follow my dream of a YUSU-run bar on campus."
Burton's other policy, to buy a set of golden ducks to become the first Your:Duck also passed, with 566 votes. He said: "I'm also looking forward to following my mandate of photographing the new Trevor and I can't wait to see him swimming away in his new home."
A motion proposed by Michael Rutherford, which aimed to replace all the Current Equality And Diversity Officers (including Women's, Disability and Racial Equality) with an Anti-Discrimination Officer, failed, with just 129 votes for and 440 against.
YUSU President Anne-Marie Canning said she was "pleased" that the motion had reached quoracy and failed to pass, and commented that YUSU was committed to fighting all kinds of discrimination, supported by the hard work of the various Diversity & Equality Officers.
The biggest turnout for voters was for the "Protect The Bridges On Campus And Improve Access Routes For All" motion. Proposed by Anne-Marie Canning, the motion passed with 705 votes for, and just 15 against, with 12 voters abstaining.
Societies and Communications Officer Sam Bayley said: "The Union has been given a clear direction on quite a number of important issues - everything from banking to Hes East sustainability to NUS delegates."
He added: "We'll now do our best to get the wheels rolling on all of these motions before the end of our sabbatical year in July."
