A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The Sports Centre have stopped taking any bookings after 1st June for the astroturf, lending further weight to the rumours that the Centre will close.
Duty Manager Carl Hodgson shed some more light on the matter, and when asked whether the astroturf was to be out of use for June, he responded, "possibly".
Hodgson said: "The work being done, relaying of the JLD and work on tennis courts, is supposed to take four months and the university want it done by October 2008". This means work would have to commence at the beginning of June.
He added: "They're negotiating with the contractors on a start date at the moment". However, he admitted he was not sure when a final decision would be made.
"The Sports Centre will be redeveloped in June so if the astroturf is not started on until later it depends on health and safety regulations; use of the astroturf may not be allowed if there are no changing rooms, toilets or disabled facilities", concluded Hodgson.
AU President Jo Carter said the rumours are "unfounded" and that the JLD astroturf pitch is to be "relaid in July".
She said: "The sports facilities in the Sports Centre may be out of action from the beginning of June and so alternative changing facilities may need to be sought but the JLD and tennis courts will be available throughout this term."
Carter had no concerns that scheduled 6-a-side tournaments and Football College Cup games will have problems being played this term. Speaking to The Yorker on Tuesday, College Co-ordinator Jack Kennedy was less confident.
Kennedy said he was "frustrated" with the Sports Centre as they have not yet come to an agreement over when any refurbishments will begin on either the Sports Centre itself or the JLD astroturf.
"If the astro and tent are closed from 1st June then I will do all I can to ensure all tournaments go ahead in some format before that deadline", said Kennedy. He is one of many third years who would be devastated if their last term at York could not involve tournament football.
"In terms of the College Cup, we could either try and have that played on the astro before June 1st (although with the number of games needing to be played that could be doubtful) or we could move it to the astro near the barracks, but that would be far from ideal." Kennedy is to hold a meeting as soon as possible to find out an answer.
A Sports Centre receptionist described the entire situation as "ludicrous", not even knowing whether he would have a job come June.
The Sports Centre are not running an indoor 5-a-side tournament for the summer term due to the refurbishment, but teams are being booked into the outdoor 6-a-side tournament. The football College Cup draw will be taking place in the coming days.
The move would also affect casual users of the sports club facilities, including those who use the gym.
No 5-a-side?! It's all a bit set-up - Hodgson knew that we were gonna finally win it this term. My dreams have been crushed, and I'm going to seek legal action.
What is going to happen to those who signed up for gym membership that goes through June and beyond?
Gutted if we can't use the astro but it does really badly need to be done, I guess in the long run it's for the best. Tough on 3rd years though!
Whenever they start, you can guarantee they'll overrun on time and budget well past October anyway...
P.S. Am I the only one who doesn't know what JLD is? A type of astro perhaps?
JLD is the name for our astro Mitch, it's someone's initials, though I couldn't tell you whose they are.
As much fun as it would be to speculate, I doubt it's John Dorian from Scrubs.
It's Greg Dyke's father, isn't it? Surely there must be a refund for anyone with a membership extending into June. Didn't they just redo the gym as well?
I think gym members paid a reduced rate for this term anyway.
Does this refurb affect things like the squash and badminton courts?
When I first saw this headline I was wondering if the Sports Centre had been overrun by cats.
I think the sports centre has said it will refund people who have paid for June, i.e people who have paid for 9 or 6 months which would normally take you to july.
Will the newly refurbished gym have a heavy weights room? or are the annoying rumours about it not being conducive to health and safety regulations true?
