After a dramatic last minute equalising goal from Richard de Boltz in the men’s hockey 1sts, the University of York have won the 2008 Roses competition against the red rose of Lancaster University.
York sportsmen and sportswomen woke up with an 18 point cushion and it seemed inevitable that York would win the first away Roses since 2002. However, as The Yorker reported yesterday, the Lancaster AU President James Marenghi was confident that Sunday would be a strong day for Lancaster.
York won the first event of the day, the mixed volleyball, to increase their lead to 22 points. Despite this early boost there was then an onslaught of red roses on The Yorker’s live results service as Lancaster closed the gap.
Disappointments in basketball, men’s football 2nds, women’s football and a near white wash in the archery meant Lancaster were frighteningly close.
At 4pm the tide had turned so much that the three events still to finish (men’s hockey 1sts, men’s football firsts and table tennis mixed 1sts) were all heading to Lancaster, which would have closed their 10 point deficit and resulted in Lancaster completing a remarkable comeback to win by 2 points.
The football team were were 2-1 down and down to ten men, the hockey lads were 3-2 down and also had a man sent off and table-tennis were 8-7 down in a first to 9 match. Heads were beginning to drop as it seemed the unthinkable had happened.
But... Cometh the hour, cometh the man and hockey hero Richard de Boltz stepped up to score a last minute equaliser in the hockey meaning the points were shared. The other games finished in Lancaster’s favour but the draw in the hockey mean the Carter-James Trophy comes back to York, in one of the closest Roses ever.
De Boltz dedicated the goal to his mother, Debbie, because the move that created the goal was named after his mother!
AU President Jo Carter was obviously delighted and said “Yes, I’m emotional. It’s fitting that it’s my club that have won the decisive points but I’m so proud of everybody and just so so happy!”
Marenghi also echoed Carter’s comments, congratulating York and thanking “everyone that took part and everyone who came down to support”.
Today's action has taken the overall Roses score to 22-21 to York, with one draw.
Roses 2008 has been an amazing weekend of sport and The Yorker congratulates everyone who took part. Well done York!
