Thursday, 8th May 2008
Student volunteers from the University of York were rewarded at a ceremony hosted by the Lord Mayor of York yesterday.

The event, hosted by the Shepherd Group, the Lord Mayor, and the Sheriff of York, honoured volunteering projects run by students.

The Rt Hon Lord Mayor of York Councillor Irene Waudby and Vanbrugh Provost Dr Allen Warren presented awards to five groups.

Waudby said: "This city wouldn't run without volunteers."

Addressing the groups, she added: "I do hope you all carry on volunteering because there's lots of people out there who need help."

Student Development and Charities Officer Joey Ellis said she felt that volunteering was an important part of the student experience: "I think Student Action is a valuable part of YUSU and this ceremony shows how valued the work of volunteers is."

She added: "It's great to see students outside of the bubble that some members of the community think they are in."

Suzie Heap, who was representing the Tea and Coffee Club said: "It was a lovely afternoon. I was really proud to represent all the other volunteers who work every week. It was also nice to hear about the other projects that are run by students in York."

Awards were presented by representatives of the Shepherd Group to the following:

  • Innovation: Fairfax House China Project
  • Growth and Influence: Hemplands Tuck Shop Project, Voice and Influence, and Open Strings
  • Achievement: Schools and Colleges Volunteering Programme

The afternoon preceded tomorrow's Volunteer of the Year awards, which sees York students in competition with each other for the title.

The Community and Volunteering Unit at the university, in partnership with YUSU, supports more than 40 projects on and around campus.
