Following Monday's General Meeting, all students will be able to participate in an online vote to choose the beneficiaries that RAG will support in the following academic year.
RAG President Helen Adams believes it to be very important for “all students to have their say and determine which charities their union's fundraising body supports next year".
It is hoped that this change will make students feel a greater affinity to the beneficiaries and encourage people to get more involved with RAG events.
Each year RAG raises money and awareness for five local, national and international charities through many diverse events and activities.
Previously these five beneficiaries were chosen through a RAG committee vote. This year these were Yorkshire Cancer Trust, St Leonard’s Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support as well as GLONA and HCPT 58.
GLONA is a small international charity that helps schoolchildren in Ghana, while HCPT 58 takes local children from disadvantaged backgrounds on holiday to Lourdes each year. St. Leonard's Hospice helps terminally ill patients, whilst Macmillan Cancer Support focuses on helping patients and their families, and the Yorkshire Cancer Trust carries out research into the causes of cancer.
One student, Dan Taylor, hopes the change will help a charity he is nominating for a beneficiary spot in 2008. He told The Yorker: "RAG could really broaden its impact by widening the type of charities supported."
Taylor is set to nominate Help for Heroes to be a beneficiary. He said he hoped that by discussing the matter now he would make every student realise that they can be involved and get a charity of their choice nominated.
The Yorker will bring you full news of the nominated beneficiaries and the new choices in the upcoming weeks.
