A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Extending beyond the usual free student night on Wednesday to include Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, students will be able to gain free entrance with an NUS card.
In a bid to encourage more students to choose Ziggy's, owner Andrew Elliot is proposing to offer students at the University of York free admission to his Micklegate nightclub throughout the week.
Elliot told The Yorker how much his nightclub “values and enjoys student nights". Elliot is considering the possibility of a second night dedicated to student customers.
Speaking in light of rumors that Ziggy’s could be closing, Elliot was adamant that the club would remain open to students and other customers alike.
Students will now be able to avoid the £2 before 11pm charge on the Tuesday Indie/Rock Night. However, there will remain a £2 charge after 11pm. Wednesday will remain free entry all night and, as of next week, so will Saturday.
The Friday B.L.I.S.S. House event will be free with an NUS card, unless, as Elliot explained, there is a “specific dance music” event, in which case there will be a small charge.
Elliot stressed that he is also “more than happy” to discuss students’ own ideas, such as potential ideas for different student-related events.
Although this is overall a good thing, i'm just concerned that students will now choose going out rather than campus events on the weekend.
You might be right. Although drink deals in town that normally put people into the Ziggy's mood (I'm thinking trebles for singles at the Nags in particular!) won't be running. So perhaps people won't bother with Ziggy's at the weekend so much.
I think the market will decide on those matters. Increased choice for students will only make campus prices more competetive and increase the standard of uni events. Perhaps for the flagging Planet V, some serious competition is exactly what it needs to re-assert itself on the campus event 'stage'.
