A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Goodricke Chair Joe Clarke gave the decision his full support: “With a lack of a central student venue in York, the Roger Kirk Centre is the nearest we’re going to get to what a student venue should be.”
Despite initial negativity about whether the project was realistic, he said: “We pushed on anyway and were successful.”
The decision came after hours of input by a team of Senior University Staff, as well as James Chair Chet Khatu and Clarke, who wanted to thank them all for their work.
In the original planning stages the Roger Kirk Centre was intended as a catering and events centre, but it was with the help of Barbara Scott, Phil Kember and the Roger Kirk Working Group that the plan came to reality.
Goodricke will now be able to hold events catering for 900 people. At present the biggest college events, Club D and Planet V, hold only 550 and 600 people respectively.
The venue will first be put to use next October during Freshers Week, hosting a joint event with James College.
The event will be a 'trial event' to gauge the success of the Roger Kirk Centre as a venue. If it goes well, many more large-scale events are set to be held there.
Clarke has promised students that the event will be “huge” and said: “I wish I was a Fresher this year and that this was my first experience of York.”
The two colleges are expecting an intake of 800 Freshers, with the extra capacity being offered to second and third years.
Clarke added that even if the initial event is successful, it would not be intended as a replacement for Goodricke Dining Hall, but would only be used around once a term.
Cool. Fair play to Joe Clarke and Goodricke, I was one of the people scoffing when he pledged to do this because everyone says it every year. But that will be really good for freshers - when I was in Goodricke we saw the RKC all decorated and lit up for 'grown-up' events round Christmas time and it looked amazing.
Brilliant news, that's a real achievement - good on you Goodricke
Just a quick note, the group wasn't made up of JCRC members as stated in the article it was made up of some senior university staff.
I scoffed too, but well done to the JCRC for pulling it off!
Actually, the venue will first be used for a JCRC Standard Event on 7 June 2008, when Alcuin celebrates its 40th Anniversary.
Well obviously Goodricke & James are doing the proper launch! haha.
To quote the booking form for Alcuin's event...."This involves a dinner followed by speeches and then a low key disco."
Love you Erik! x
Goodness me. The powers that be are actually going to let students do something fun?! Using their precious conference hall/tepid burger emporium? Never thought I'd see the day. Well done Goodricke and James.
make mine a strawberry smoothie
Haha, sorry, the smoothie bar wont be open that night.
It could be... it just won't be a soft drink that's all
The low-key disco may be the description Mr Clarke..... be we all know Alcuin are party animals at heart. I pity the RP at that event.
