A storage unit near D Block caught fire, expelling smoke that filled up the area.
Reports suggested that the fire began in the Bin Storage Unit and spread from there.
Two fire brigade vehicles were at the scene, with up to nine firefighters directly tackling the blaze. There are no current reports of injury.
Natalie Schofield, a first-year D Block resident, told The Yorker: "The fire started about 10 minutes ago [9.05pm], we came out of the block and the smoke was thick and all around."
She added: "It was quite scary actually, because it's just at the other end of the corridor."
D Block contains approximately 60 residents. Schofield told us that fire crews and porters were on scene within ten minutes.
Concerns have already been raised about the efficiency of fire alarms, with some residents reporting a 10-15 minute delay between the activation of the alarm and arrival of fire crews. Some smelled smoke from within the block before realising the extent of the fire.
D Block residents have been told they will not be able to return to their rooms for the next three or four hours.
Arson is suspected and it is thought the building contained asbestos. However porters will not be able to comment until tomorrow when more investigations will have taken place.
Wow... low blow #1. Why not take out an advertising agreement with The Yorker?
10 minutes sounds fine to me considering they have to travel safely from the centre of town to campus, especially during the day. Unfortunately they can't just bomb about at 60mph.
Several pictures now appearing on nouse.co.uk - did The Yorker not bring any photographers to the dance?
Caption where?
I think given that it's 9-10pm on a Wednesday night the team's done very well to get photos within an hour of the first report. Good job Amy, Ruth & Michael!
Any word on these comments of asbestos and alleged arson that Nouse are reporting on?
Yeah, how come Nouse have so many more details?
"Smelt."
hmmm, that last paragraph wasn't there earlier. Did you steal that from Nouse by any chance?
Just to clarify: All of the information in the article was obtained by The Yorker reporters - credit to Nouse if they published the same information earlier.

Are there some pictures I'm missing on the Nouse website? Can only see two, wouldn't really class that as "several". Also, someone was in such a rush to upload the story they've messed up the news page, the thumbnail for the Derwent fire story is the 250% picture. Could've sworn that was meant for the article below...
" Cars that were parked next to the building were quickly removed.";"
..I was in derwent bar throughout the fire, almost 3, maybe 4 hours after the fire first started a porter walked around asking 'does anyone here own a ford ka...." hardly quick, or in fact removed!
Also, having seen these pictures I wish I'd popped outside to see the flames! Damn the all english final...
erm, when a fire starts in an asbestos filled building, if u can smell the smoke does that mean ur screwed? because Derwent was rammed for the champions league final and every1 must have breathed in that stuff...
The asbestos comment makes this all slightly sensationalist. I think it's highly unlikely the 300 people in Derwent Bar are now going to contract a form of nasty lung cancer as a result of the fire. If we are all unfortunate enough to do so, expect a large chunk of University compensation and an end to any plans for Hes. East.
Seriously though, it's to great credit of the Derwent Vis. Ents. for putting on such a well-run event and undercutting Halifax's advertising 'campaign' to get us all watching it in JJ's. Derwent is the place on campus to watch sport. Bring on SKY...
..I hear Remi is quite ill and spent more time there than most that night!
#16 are you really asking for your medical prognosis on The Yorker wall...perhaps you should visit your doctor..
