A group of first year students became involved in a random attack while in Rumours.
The group, who live in Eden's Court, were enjoying a night out when they were approached by an older male. The man wanted information about a glass which had been smashed near his friend.
Once the group had explained that they had no information to offer the incident seemed to be over.
However, after a few minutes the man came back and accused the group of attacking one of his female friends. Both the woman in question and the students denied any knowledge of the supposed incident.
A quarrel soon began. When one of the students stood up to diffuse the situation, he was punched in the face. The fight then spread to another member of the group who was also assaulted.
The male victim described the incident as a "bit of a shock" and "a totally unprovoked and unexpected attack".
One of the other members of the group said: "We were just having fun; planning to head to Ziggy’s. This is not something you hear about much in York."
Another student who was from a different table tried to intervene, he suffered facial injuries after having a glass smashed in his face.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene by a member of the Rumours staff.
On returning home the students made a statement to the police and have since had photos taken of their injuries in order to help the investigation further.
Another unprovoked attack occurred in the same week when a member of Goodricke JCRC was attacked on the way home from an event.
The student was returning from 'Jailbreak' in the early hours of Sunday morning when three teenagers approached him and said: "‘It's not your lucky night." Another asked, "Are you picking a fight?"
I think they were just looking for a thrill. I hope they got it.
Despite offering no response the student was attacked by the youths. He was pushed to the floor, and suffered a broken nose. The teenagers then proceeded to help the victim to his feet.
The three then left whilst the student called an ambulance. When talking to The Yorker he said: "Looking back on it, it's quite amusing. What type of person attacks you and then helps you back up? I think they were just looking for a thrill. I hope they got it."
The police are investigating both incidents.
My housemates and myself have been victims of attacks in the last few months in Tanghall that were caused by local youths just wanting a fight. Its gotten to the point where some of my housemates and neighbours wont walk the street after 10pm on a weekend for fear of being attacked and the police can't seem to do anything about it.
agreed. a friend of mine suffered pretty nasty injuries to his face after being attacked unprovoked while walking through Tanghall, it seems that the sensible thing to do is to walk in groups of 3 or 4 and simply avoid the place at night. This is hardly ideal for students that live there though, the police need to pull their finger out a bit more and get a lot more 'bobbies on the beat' in the area.
