A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The Yorker can now report that although the inquiry is still ongoing, there is no proof that the fire outside Derwent D Block was caused by arson.
Director of Health and Safety Tom Fleming told The Yorker that there was "evidence of youngsters in the area at the time”, but as yet nothing suggests they had a hand in causing the fire. He added: “There is no CCTV footage.”
Initial reports stated that the fire, which broke out at 9.05pm last night, may have been caused by local youths. However, it has since been revealed that it may be due to their actions that the situation was not significantly worse.
The swift response of the two local youths is being praised today.
Dan White, 16, said: “We saw something was wrong from Heslington church yard. We rang the fire brigade straight away and started walking towards the uni. We offered to help move the wheely bins away from the flames but the porters warned us not to come near.”
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have said: “Our crews are going to be conducting an investigation before they can determine the exact cause of the fire.”
Fleming explained the reasoning behind closing all the windows and doors in the surrounding Derwent blocks: “As with any fire there are likely to be toxic materials in the air around the fire”. In this case, the fumes could be especially dangerous as plastic was burnt.
He also said that although there is asbestos sheeting in the area it is “in a stable condition despite the fire”.
He told The Yorker that the sheeting is “still intact” and that contractors have been called to remove it. They aim to “secure the area today" so that the site can be cleared in the coming week.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said that the damage was severe: “There was 75% severe fire damage to the [bike] shed, 6 industrial waste bins and 10 bikes and 10% radiated heat damage to a car.”
Many students watched from college windows and gathered transfixed in the car park as the fire brigade tackled the blaze.
One fire fighter said: “We are always getting called to the university on false alarms; this is only one of three actual fires that have been real emergencies in my experience.”
When people hear that there were local youths, their immediate reaction is that the youths must have started the fire.
It's rather ironic that instead they had a hand in stopping it.
goodricke a block has just been evacuated
I just want to inform people that Goodricke A Block was not evacuated due to fire. It was a fan on an oven that wasn't working which caused excessive smoke, setting off the alarms.
