Rapist arrested after 11 years

Police arrive
Wednesday, 28th May 2008
Eleven years after his attempted rape of a University of York student, Steven Sellars was arrested and pleaded guilty to the offence.

On the 26th April 1996 Steven Sellars, now 41, attempted to rape a University of York student. Eleven years later, he has pleaded guilty to the crime at York Crown Court.

The victim, then 19, stated in a press conference: "I want this man caught and I don't want him to be out there to do it again to somebody else."

Sellars was finally arrested after attempting to return a craft knife his son had accidently brought home from school. Head teacher David Ellis explained that calling the police was entirely appropriate given that Sellars had approached the staff with a knife.

Sellars was released following the incident. However police had taken his DNA, which matched the one preserved from the attack eleven years before. Two weeks later, he was arrested for attempted rape.

After hearing his guilty plea, Recorder of York Judge Stephen Ashurst said: "It may well have come as a very considerable relief for a number of people to hear you enter your guilty plea to this charge today."

Sellars had two previous rape convictions, one in South Yorkshire from 1989 and one in Leeds from 1993.
