Summer Ball sells out for first time

Summer Ball 08
Wednesday, 4th June 2008
All the tickets for the after-dinner Summer Ball have sold out, for the first time.

Services and Finance Officer Matt Burton said: "This is the first time Summer Ball tickets have sold out and we are very happy to have done so."

Also on sale were the Graduation Dinner and Summer Ball combination tickets of which there are currently 41 remaining.

Burton said: "We expect the dinner tickets to be finally sold out by the end of the week as the last tickets only went on yesterday."

The banqueting suite has recently been reorganised which has led to an increased capacity, thus enabling more tickets to go on sale.

Many graduating students have been left without tickets, leading to feelings of disappointment.

One third year said: "I had to buy a ticket that included the Graduation Dinner as well because I didn't get the ball one in time. It's a bit of a pain really... but I'm sure it'll be worth it."

The first ever sell-out has been put down to the greater amount of publicity around campus as well as the perceived good value for money.

One first-year said: "I bought my ticket at the start of term to make sure I got one. I'm genuinely excited about going, with everything that's been organised it should be fantastic."

The event has aimed to cater to a wider range of tastes, with a variety of acts and entertainment through the night. Headliners include Booty Love and Alphabeat.

A second year politics student said: "The performances look amazing! I'm really excited. It looks really promising."

The Summer Ball is set to be the biggest event on campus, in terms of both budget and capacity. Burton said: "We hope the memory of the event will last for those graduating this year."

Imagine how many they could sell if they had decent acts like Big D...

After Ash last year, what the hell happened? Booty Luv and Alphabeat seem to be nothing but a couple of one-hit wonders. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to going, I'm just disappointed with the value for money compared with previous years.

Or maybe its because the acts are so good that they've sold out Mitch? It would be nice if people approached things with the perspective of others in mind and not just their own for once...

Oh come on, this isn't news. Tickets have been on sale for weeks. If you haven't got your act together before now, what have you been doing since... April.

I would say this is news, as its the first time it has ever sold out. However, it isn't news that people are annoyed that they missed out on a ticket as #3 said, the tickets have been on sale a long time.

Hi Mitch, bit confused about your one-hit wonders comment.

(With no disrespect to Big D - Chesney Hawkes IS a one-hit wonder).

Booty Luv - three top ten hits, with one in the top ten for over eight weeks. And I'll be surprised if there's not more to come.

Taio Cruz - Two hits (in a year). An up-and-coming artist, so we should be expecting more here too.

Alphabeat - Two top-ten hits, out of two UK releases. Their album's just been released and is expected to do well.

Bjorn Again - one of the most popular tribute bands of all time.

Plus there's lots of other acts so that there's something for everyone to enjoy!

As far as people being upset about the event selling out, it IS two weeks away now. We've given people lots of opportunities and reminders to buy, so hopefully anyone who really wanted to go has had the chance. Matt's managed to squeeze in some extra tickets by rearranging the dining room, so if you want to get one, get on the website now!

Personally, I think it's great that a big college event and the biggest YUSU event of the year have sold out despite their proximity. And if you've missed out this time, hopefully you'll have the chance to get in quicker next year!

Good to see YUSU is being paid to promote B list artists and that our communications officer is going to turn up a week early to the ball

I think I saw Bjorn Again at work do last year. They were surprisingly good.

Anon 6 - 'B list artists?' What do you expect, A List? Somehow I don't think York Racecourse is going to be seeing the Red Hot Chilli Peppers any time soon.....

Be happy people, its a sell out show, this is a good thing!

... the exact same amount, but slightly faster?

Summer ball should be good, I think YUSU have done well with not only the qulity but also the diversity of the acts - In my opinion there's a bit there for everyone. Just a shame the menu for the Grad Dinner is a load of crap

"Just a shame the menu for the Grad Dinner is a load of crap"

So true. The dinner menu put me off buying the dinner and ball ticket, which is a shame as i'm a 3rd year and it would have been nice to go to the dinner. I just didn't want to pay and extra £30 to eat food that i didn't really want, not when I could (and will) pay less elsewhere and actually choose something i wanted. Would it have been that hard to get a selection on the menu - say 4 choices for each course? And then have made people pre order their meal when they bought the ticket?
If you don't like one of the courses then you're screwed as you have to pay for it.

Hi,

The dinner price of £30 isn't just for the meal, but many more things:

Drinks reception on campus
Chocolate fountain
Priority access for a good 2-3 hours to the fairground
A celidh post-dinner
Eating with your graduating year in one venue at one time
And more items we're hoping to include

It is really hard catering for nearly 800 people at one time and the Racecourse do a fantastic job - but we are limited on what menu we can offer.

We are looking at what we might be able to do for next year to give more choice.

Thanks,

Matt

We're not getting paid to promote any artists, but perfomers do cost us money. £35 for four big artists is good value for money! I'm afraid if you wanted bigger names, you'd have to pay for them, and I don't see 3000 people affording that increase at this time of year...

Sorry for getting week numbers wrong. The ball is indeed in week 10. I will be turning up early though, as I'll be working on the night. Give me a wave.
