A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
As of next term, colleges and groups such as RAG and Student Action will be able to use the Langwith bar for their own events, apart from during Week 10.
The decision, made at this week's Ents Committee, looks set to make the bar the centre of college and university wide events.
With the closing of Halifax College's JJ's at the end of the Summer term and James's lack of a bar, the YUSU venue aims to provide a regular space for college run events on campus.
Zach Pepper, Langwith Chair said: "The Friday nights have been reserved for people who would not have previously had a natural home for events; for example, Student Action, RAG and colleges without bars.
He added: ""Having an event on every Friday gives the event calendar a level of continuity that it lacks, as does having college events on the Saturdays."
During Week 10 an end of term Christmas event is planned to take place. The aim is to involve as many college Entertainment Officers in the organisation process as possible.
YUSU Entertainment Officer Edward Durkin said: “Any colleges wanting to get involved will work together to hold the last event of term in Langwith.”
Pepper said that "the Christmas event on Thursday will be held not by YUSU, but on a profit share basis with YUSU, Alcuin, and Halifax."
Although the capacity and licensing is yet to be confirmed the bar aims to be a campus wide attraction hoping to gather support from many students from all over the university, regardless of their college.
Concerns have been raised about how the new bar will affect the popularity of other college bars around campus.
Vanbrugh Chair, Matt Oliver said: "I think if the SU bar gains strength our bars will suffer, if for no other reason than YUSU will be able to invest well in one bar, whereas Commercial Services will be spread across a number of bars, and with a number of programmes to run only one of which is bars."
But warned that colleges may have to take the rough with the smooth and said: "Ultimately I believe one of the intentions of the YUSU bar is to pave the way for an YUSU venue which would be a great thing, so if things are not brilliant in the short term as far as other college bars go then we must hope that the end result is the venue that most students agree that they want."
Pepper added: "It will have impacts, and we will need to carefully monitor the way that the new bar slots in to our existing organisation. But, it will make the union stronger, and enable it to give more support to college events!"
First year Matt Henderson said: “I think it will be really great if everyone goes to the YUSU bar. At the moment a lot of people just go to the pubs in Heslington rather than their college bars as then they're more likely to run into people from other colleges. Hopefully people will think the same of the YUSU bar next term.”
My God, Does Matt Oliver ever stop complaining?
If the SU bar is successful, then Commercial services will have to buck up their ideas. The only reason they're able be so badly managed at the moment is because there's no competition. Its got nothing to do with 'stretching resources', its just incompetence that means that the university consistently fails to sell beer to students. The Charles is part of a national chain, and is still more popular than campus bars.
Yeah seriously, does Matt Oliver ever stop commenting on things? How is he so in with all the uni press that he has an opinion printed on every single issue!?
I think Matt has misunderstood his role as a college chair - his role is to promote the interests of students, rather than complain that a university bar, rather than a union bar, may suffer. Whose side is he on?

I think you'll find Matt Oliver is probably asked, as College Chair, by The Yorker, for a comment on this story. Incidentally, his concerns are felt by a lot of students and JCRC members, particularly in bars doing well like Derwent and Vanbrugh. However, most have chosen to take the stance that a YUSU bar will only help to wipe out inneficiency in college bars and hopefully drive prices down. This is not to say his concerns are not shared by other students and he has a right to comment regarding them.
Matt is a legend, in a different life I would have his babies.
I love you Matt Oliver.
