History module choices to be reconsidered

Students attempt to swap their unwanted modules
Friday, 6th June 2008
Following a meeting with the First Year History Representatives, the History Department has agreed to review their module allocation system.

First Year History Representatives Adam Shergold and Olivia Shaw met Head of Department Miles Taylor and Second Year Senior Tutor Mark Roodhouse on Tuesday to discuss their concerns.

Over 150 students have now joined the Facebook group Help us change the second-year History module system, created by First Year History Representative Adam Shergold.

As reported by The Yorker, the first and second year History students were told that module choices for their second and third years could no longer be ranked by order of preference.

The modules that students had been allocated were announced last week, with many students expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome.

Adam Shergold, First Year History Representative

The Teaching Committee decided to review the new system at its next meeting on Wednesday 18th June.

First and second year students who were unhappy with their allocated modules for next year have been given the option to exchange their modules provided they can reach an agreement with another student. It has been suggested that this will be hard to complete logistically.

A first year History and Politics student said: "It's a pain that we have to sort all this out ourselves since it is an issue with the Department. I'm sure it'll be difficult to actually find someone who wants to swap - I'm still looking - but I guess it's better than nothing."

In a message sent to members of the Facebook group, Shergold thanked people for their support. He added: "I am extremely optimistic that the farcical situation that we have just witnessed will not be repeated".
