JCR revamp for Halifax and James

James College
James College
Wednesday, 11th June 2008
James JCRC Chair Chet Khatu has succeeded in his promise to introduce SKY TV to his college's JCR.

Both James and Halifax are set to receive funding from Vice-Chancellor Brian Cantor in an attempt to improve their respective college venues.

The lack of a proper central venue has long been an issue for James College and next year Halifax will also be without a bar or catering facilities.

Khatu has been in negotiations with the Vice-Chancellor since taking up his post in January and has finally secured the pledge of money to install a SKY TV package.

He said: "With the introduction of this package we'll display a slightly more cohesive atmosphere in our community, which is at least the first step in alleviating the levels of disillusion surrounding James College.

"I'll continue working hard to create an atmosphere that will make our members equally proud of James College as our counterparts are of their own colleges."

His efforts have resulted in the university agreeing to pay the SKY installment fee and the first two years of subscription to the service.

After this period, the colleges will have to find their own source of revenue to pay for the fees, which are in excess of £3,000 a year.

The promise of this initial funding follows the announcement in May that James College would be allowed to use the Roger Kirk Centre for events in the next academic year.

Khatu said that he would like to continue to work with the university staff to ensure the success of these plans.

HCSA President David Sharp declined to comment.

If Sky were available in James when I lived on campus, I would have gone to the JCR a hell of a lot more...

number 19, matches for euro 2008 have been shown successfully in derwent, our ageing/temperamental equipment sometimes needs a bit of encouragement, but all the matches we have been allowed to show have been (sometimes have to wait until food isn't serving anymore).

anybody else think that although this is brilliant for james it is an effort by the university to make up for closing some bars?

with the SU taking over langwith bar, which has already had a detrimental effect on when we can have our Club D's next term (so potentially less bar takings) i think it is quite important for us to try and get SKY too to keep our bar as successful as it already is.

Why's everyone wetting themselves over getting sky? In my opinion just buy a freeview box and pay for the sultana/santana/banana subscription to watch the ipl!

£3,000 to watch a bit of sport and the odd film.. Sky must have one of the highest margins around - how much does it cost them to provide the service? A dish?

It does seem a little odd that a closed common room such as James should be given Sky for 2 years, whereas an open common room such as Vanbrugh had to remove their Sky package last year due to the extortionate cost paid entirely by the JCR, leaving us with a decrepit tv and a redundant freeview box seeing as there is no access to a regular tv aerial...

Setanta have informed me that we are eligible for their service at the cheap rate. Much cheaper that £3,000 a year for Murdoch TV.

Surely £3000 a year could be better spent by the university? Maybe on the library, or something similar that all students will benefit from, not just the few that want to watch sport?

Also, the James Chair seems to be one of the few that think James has no "college spirit". I am a James student and I do not think there is a lot of disillusionment. If he stopped saying that people are disillusioned then nobody would think that, because it is not true! He of all people should not express that view.

PS, to all of those that have raised issues with the cost, I've written to Brian Cantor after negotiating with a SKY rep, explaining what our common room is like in detail and we now have a new offer of £1728 (£144pcm) which was obtained just before the release of this article. Apologies for not making that clear earlier.

Chet, just a few questions I have asked before but you have been more intent on having a little personal dig than answering them.

1) How big is the James college tv/screen?
2) How many people does the JCR hold/seat?
3) Will you make SKY available to uni by publicising the showing of big sporting events as we do in Derwent or will it be exclusively for James students?
4) How do you propose funding this?
