YUSU to host Supervisor of the Year awards

Supervisor of the year awards
Supervisor of the year 2008
Thursday, 12th June 2008
YUSU aims to to raise awareness of the important role supervisors play in students' academic progress.

With the efficiency of the supervision system increasingly questioned, YUSU has launched a supervisor of the year award.

The award hopes to recognise the positive contributions of supervisors. So far 56 supervisors have been nominated.

YUSU hopes that by calling attention to the role played by supervisors, and acknowledging those that have excelled in their role, they can "set a gold standard for all supervision".

YUSU admitted: "Many students have not found the supervisor system useful or supportive since they've been at York."

YUSU president Anne-Marie Canning said: "I think the current supervisory system works fantastically well in some cases and doesn't work at all in others."

One third year politics student said: "My supervisor has been really great. I think if you're lucky in terms of who you get it can really make a difference."

Canning also pointed out that if students are unhappy with their supervisors they can ask to change. She said: "I did so in my first year and it made a massive difference to my academic progression and university experience."

Nominations close on Sunday. To nominate your supervisor click here
