Race to become the York Apprentice

Apprentice
Last year's doughnut challenge
Tuesday, 22nd May 2007

York Entrepreneurs have received applications from over 100 people in search of becoming part of the winning team of the York Apprentice. The prize this year is £500.

The competition, which begins tomorrow, will run until Saturday where three teams will go through to a campus final.

Sarah Johnson, event organiser, said: "The tasks this year are sales, creativity and marketing, and event management. We can't tell you what the actual challenges will be but I can tell you there will be adjudication on performance as well as results. It's possible that teams could have points knocked off this year for the way they do things."

The Yorker can reveal that the judges have been chosen from Stonesoup and CETLE, as well as another organisation which is yet to be confirmed.

Last year challenges included selling doughnuts on campus and organising an event for a campus bar on Saturday night. Last year's winners, "Dead Black Cat" were all aged 19 and were comprised of psychology, biology and economics students. They beat off teams which included the incumbent YUSU president Rich Croker. This year York Vision have entered the fray as well, hoping to claim a business victory for the newspaper.

Ben Van Diggele, spokesperson for York Entrepeneurs said: "This is the second year of the competition and it's only getting bigger and more competitive. It's hard to say who will win, but it's never the hot favourite."
