A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The event, which was advertised as ‘Drink JJ’s Dry’, saw all shots avaliable for a pound on Saturday night, with the intentention of rolling this offer over to Sunday night to include all pints for a pound as well.
It makes you wonder whether they’d still be closing if they’d had cheap drinks offers more often.
However, despite the only advertising on Facebook, the event proved so popular that by Sunday night the only beer left on tap was Tetley’s.
In response, bar manager Jo Foster did reduce the price of some bottled beer to make up for the lack of cheap pints.
Students responded enthusiastically to the challenge leading Foster to email members of the group to report that the only alcohol left after the weekend was six pints of Tetley.
A first year student who attended the event said: "It was great to see JJ’s so busy, it makes you wonder whether they’d still be closing if they’d had cheap drinks offers more often."
The weekend was rounded off with the last of the college's weekly bar quizzes.
The closure of JJ's leaves Halifax freshers without a bar for the start of the next academic year, and was the source of Anne-Marie Canning's emotional speech at the Langwith Bar meeting earlier in the week. This could well create difficulties for new students due to the isolation of Halifax from the main campus. It has yet to be announced what the building will be used for in the future.
So students will drink on campus if it's cheap enough then? Who'd have thought! UNIVERSITY LISTEN UP!
The same thing happened with Drink Langwith Dry... if students hear alcohol is cheap, they'll pop along. There's a reason Keystones and the Charles are always packed on a Monday - The former does £1 drinks and the latter has reduced prices too. Halifax will be ok without a bar as I think most students this year went elsewhere, but the University should definitely introduce more offers in the bars they haven't given up on.
Perhaps it would have been more prudent to make JJ's the future SU-run bar? After all, Langwith is always going to struggle to compete with Derwent bar, and Halifax is not only isolated, but also the largest college.
Ben G raises a good point. However, the problem with JJ's has always been that it is away from the main campus. Even if it were made into the new SU bar (which may have made sense on the grounds of JJ's greater size when compared to Langwith bar) it would be considered too far to go just for a few drinks, by many students.
With regards YUSU running it, idiotic 'welfare issues' prevented JJs from being part of campus weds. From what i remember the nannies thought it would be too dangerous to cross the road while intoxicated, thus leaving JJs out of the promotion. (if a union person could either confirm this or debunk it i'd be grateful)
JJs suffered at the hands of the charles. I only ever went in a few times, the England vs. South Africa game probably the one time i ever saw it full. Even then not many people were drinking. From what i've heard halifaxers this year bought a crate to drink at home then headed off into town most nights.
Shame really, if a private company took it over, extended the opening hours and cut drinks prices, along with a nice refurb, it would probably roll in the money.
