Students set to protest about bar

Bar protest
Thursday, 19th June 2008
York students are being urged to don their dust suits this afternoon to protest to the University.

The protest, organised by Policy and Campaigns Officer Tom Langrish and Michael Batula, as well as Langwith Chair Zach Pepper, aims to sway Vice-Chancellor Brian Cantor into changing the decision made last week.

The University has withdrawn initial support for the YUSU Bar to open in October 2008.

The decision leaves Langwith College without a bar for Freshers Week 2009, which the campaign's Facebook group condemns as "represent[ing] the University's disregard for the will of the students".

The YUSU Langwith Bar project has been backed by Langwith JCRC, Union Senate and the student body.

Two votes, one held in March and one in this week's Union General Meeting (UGM), saw students vote in favour of the bar.

Pepper said: "The decision now lies with Brian Cantor as to when we get our bar. We need to show him that getting a bar ready for October is important to students."

It comes after the results of the latest Union General Meeting (UGM) which saw 'Emergency Motion - Campaign for a 1st October 2008 opening of the Langwith Cafe Bar Development' gain 353 votes for, 16 against and 4 abstentions.

It also saw the passing of the Union Budget, 'Moving YUSU Forward', which could lead to changes within the Sabbatical Officers structure, and 'Make YUSU Campaign For Longer Library Opening Hours'.

Tonight's meeting with Brian Cantor takes place in V/045 at 5.15pm. Those wanting to join the campaign should meet at the SU Centre at 4pm.

Was this story posted yesterday? I didn't see it then. Unless of course the posting date has been altered.

This won't change cantor's mind at all. It'll just look like a cheap, immature stunt.

The facts are that the uni has a lot of regeneration to do in residences because of asbestos. They can't have another freshers' disaster like they've had the previous few years (hotel, kitchens etc...) and this must be the priority.

They're also paying for Wentworth accommodation revamping, the physics asbestos work plus work on the stairwell area and new walls, the HERC, de-asbestosing central hall, reaccommodation of staff in the new building, and probably many more jobs that are more important than another bar. Oh, and heslington east. Mustn't forget that little project.

Patience, my friends!

Edit: however theres nothing like a good old political stunt, even if it won't change the guy's mind! Enjoy!

I agree that there are higher priorities than the new bar, and projects such as accommodation blocks should be completed before it.

However, in addition to it being what the students want, it should be open by freshers week because if it isn't the university will be letting a heck of a lot of profit go. The university could get back a substantial amount of their investment in that week alone.

Freshers and re-freshers weeks are some of the heaviest drinking weeks of the year, and it seems only good business sense that we should have the new SU bar working and ready to take advantage of that fact.

Helen - the University won't be letting their own profit go, they'll be letting the Union's go on our behalf! This is one of the reasons we need to apply pressure - on business grounds as well as the impact it will have on our students!
