First York are to improve their bus services to and from campus for new and returning students.

First York have introduced a new £2 return fare as well as a late-night service for University of York students to run until 2.15am every Monday to Thursday.

The new 4U service is an extension of the normal Number 4, which runs throughout the day from campus to Acomb through the town centre.

Students holding a valid student card will be able to benefit from the £2 return fare between the university and York Railway Station.

The new service and fares will run as a trial until the end of the Autumn Term. Charlotte Hudson-Scott, First York's Marketing Manager, said that FTR hopes “the students will support its introduction to enable First to continue operation into 2009”.

Second-year student Leon Bailey said: “I think this is a good idea, the fares were too expensive before. Hopefully it will last longer this time.”

Both the 4U extension and the reduced fare resulted from month-long talks between YUSU and First York.

Societies and Communications Officer Rory Shanks said YUSU were “delighted” that First York has listened to student concerns and they “hope that these developments will continue for the long-term future”.
