Freshers forced off campus

Campus
Campus will soon be overflowing
Monday, 13th October 2008
Students have faced accommodation chaos as rooms ran out before many had been given a place.

Many first years have had to accept shared or off-campus rooms, with the hope of being offered a private room on campus in the near future.

When the shortage of available rooms became clear steps were taken to provide more space for new students. Rooms were adapted and made into shared rooms for two students.

However, this proved insufficient, so private housing has also been rented by the university, providing accommodation for over 20 more students.

A week before the start of term, the Accommodation Office sent out emails to those who had not yet received confirmation of accommodation.

Manager of Student Support Services Steve Page cited a "very large number of applications for accommodation" as the reason for the delays with the processing and allocation of rooms.

In this email Page told students: "I want to apologise for the frustration and anxiety this may well have caused you."

Those who had applied for accommodation before the deadline were assured that they would be provided with a contract with the university for a room, whether on campus or in the private renting sector.

Many students feel that the situation has not been sufficiently explained. One affected first year said: "Accommodation is a major element to university life and I just feel like they didn't handle it properly."

University Press Officer David Garner said: "Once the term has started and student accommodation has been resolved, there will be a thorough review of how the situation arose. We shall address any shortcomings in our processes before Autumn 2009."

Such a shame for all the new students. It reminds me of the bleachfields situation last year with vanbrugh students.
