The asbestos above Langwith bar has pushed the opening of the new student venue to January 09, three months later than expected.
Instead of opening for Week 1 of Autumn Term, the bar will now be ready in time for the Spring Term. This means Langwith College will not have a bar during Welcome Week.
Societies and Communications officer Rory Shanks said: “both the JCRC and YUSU have worked hard to fit events around the situation.”
During Access All Areas they hope a temporary events notice will enable the provision of at least some form of entertainment in Langwith.
Initially YUSU called upon the university to start the asbestos removal as soon as possible to avoid having to delay the re-modelling and opening of the venue. At the time, several protests were held outside Heslignton Hall.
The university announced that beginning the asbestos removal before Autumn Term was impossible due to other works already scheduled for completion by that date.
We've now managed to work closely with the university to ensure the bar will open for the Spring Term.
Keeping Langwith bar open without the refurbishments for Welcome Week was considered. However, YUSU in conjunction with the university decided a delayed opening was the best course of action.
Shanks said: “this is only really a delay from the perspective that we originally wanted to open the venue ready for Welcome Week. However we've now managed to work closely with the university to ensure the bar will open for the Spring Term.”
YUSU have organised a week long telethon in order to raise funds for the Langwith Bar project. If you would like to volunteer contact YUSU Development & Charities Officer, Jamie Tyler at studentdevelopment@yusu.org
Surely the asbestos was already known about rather than discovered? The University are required by law to keep a very specific records of asbestos locations. It's just that they couldn't deal with having so much work going on at once over summer and naturally, cutting the YUSU project that would take money away from their own bars in the lucrative Welcome Week was the first choice.
Isn't this really old news? Nouse had an article about this 3 months ago...
Which was published during the summer holidays, during which time The Yorker is not active.
