The university had planned to link the two campuses with a road that passed through Dean’s Acre, a piece of land at the north western corner of Field Lane and Windmill Lane.
Parish councillor Jeffrey Stern has complained that the proposed route passed within yards of Heslington Church.
Stern argued: “Such a road will destroy the peace of a holy site that is central to the people of Heslington and its core values.”
Following a meeting of the University Liaison Forum, the university agreed to consider a new route that would not pass through Dean’s Acre.
Vice-Chancellor Brian Cantor said: “We had always understood that protecting the junction at the heart of the village, where University Road finishes, would be important to local people.”
In defence of the university’s proposed route, Cantor added: “We hear differing views on priorities, and valid points are made not only about Dean’s Acre, but also how students will travel around the larger campus, and how we can protect and enhance the main village road junction. Satisfying all these demands simultaneously is not straightforward.”
