The York Press has reported that Steven Sellars has been found not guilty of a rape attempt which occurred at Clifton Bridge 12 years ago.
Following a six and half hour retirement, the jury delivered a not guilty verdict.
However, Sellars may yet be jailed for life for another crime over which he has been remanded in custody.
In May The Yorker reported that Sellars had pleaded guilty to the attempted rape of a York student in an incident that happened on Windmill Lane in April 1996.
It was press coverage of this court hearing that led the Clifton Bridge victim to allege that it was Sellars who attacked her in June 1996.
Sellars remains in custody awaiting the sentence on this charge, which carries the maximum sentence of life imprisonment for attempted rape.
He is known to have already served seven years for a rape committed in January 1989 and also has other previous convictions.
Sentencing has been adjourned to allow psychiatrists to judge the risk Sellars could pose for women after his release.
