The university is to carry out a survey to decide the fate of the Goodricke-Vanbrugh bridge.
The survey is to take place over three days and aims to look at pedestrian movements on the bridge.
It is hoped the information gathered will be useful when planning options for the replacement bridge.
Amongst the issues to be considered is whether the bridge should be relocated. The bridge was first closed in January and re-opened in April for single-file traffic.
Facilites Manager Keith Lilley told The Yorker at the time: "This is a major piece of building work and we expect it to be completed by October 2009. In the meantime, the current bridge will be reopened from April, following some essential upgrading."
The initial closure of the bridge led to an outcry from students who claimed the Goodricke-Vanbrugh bridge was an essential part of campus.
A facebook group was created to protest the decision.
Students have again emphasised the importance of the bridge.
An Environmental Geography student said: "It will make walking to lectures more difficult. Closing the bridge even temporarily would be an inconvenience."
