Questions of legitimacy see GSA elections re-opened

Thursday, 13th November 2008
Following the GSA elections on 31st October, legitimacy questions have been raised regarding four positions. The committee has decided to re-open nominations for all four.

Elections for the positions of President, Academic and Welfare Officer, Overseas Officer and Treasurer will take place together with already scheduled by-elections from Friday 28th November to Friday 5th December.

This decision was taken when the GSA Executive Committee met to discuss the complaints which had been made regarding the credibility of results.

None of the four officers in question were present at the meeting. The previous results have since been declared void.

In a press release the GSA have said: “Following lengthy discussions concerning the nature and details of the complaints, we have decided as a committee to reopen the voting.”

The complaints highlighted the fact that GSA members were prevented from entering Edge, where elections were being held, due to it being at capacity. This followed an “unanticipated high voter turnout” which led to some members being prevented from casting their votes.

Nominations for the position of Treasurer have been re-opened after claims that a misunderstanding occurred over the eligibility of certain candidates.

The decision to re-open nominations is in line with the recommendations of the University's Registrar and Secretary Sally Neocosmos, who reviewed the complaints. YUSU have been asked to act as an independent observer to the new elections

Rui Huang, who beat Luke Martin for the position of President said: “As far as I know, this election is democratic. All the ex-officers did their best to make the election fair and intact.”

The GSA also said: “We would like to apologise to all members of the GSA, and especially to the candidates concerned, for the confusion and upset that this situation has caused.”

What actually happened though? The Article doesn't really seem to explain what the complaints were. were the problems at the hustings, or do the GSA not vote online?

The GSA, for some strange reason, seem to be against online voting and still use paper ballots.

The complaints highlighted the fact that GSA members were prevented from entering Edge, where elections were being held, due to it being at capacity. This followed an “unanticipated high voter turnout” which led to some members being prevented from casting their votes.

That seems to explain the problem pretty well to me...

Wow, look at the anonymous posters...

They had hustings in place - and too many people went, filling it to maximum capacity so that 10 people couldn't come in. Therefore there have been complaints that the elections were undemocratic... I believe, at least!

Instead of voting being staggered through the day most turned up at the same time and unfortunately that caused problems. I think the fact that the elected GSA members have gone for the reelection option means that they will probably all win again... but we'll see!

Also, the comment about "All the ex-officers did their best to make the election fair and intact" - absolute rubbish!!

Only 2 of the 3 past sabbatical officers were even at the elections, and out of 8 of the volunteer officers, only 1 was there - and that was only because they were going to re run.

Oh, edit posts! Good stuff. I'll also use delete to remove my second post. Nouse doesn't have those options, you see...

And it's completely irrelevant whether the outgoing officers tried or didn't try: whoever is in charge of the elections should make certain that this kind of thing doesn't happen. If all of the officers were in charge then I think an absense of them turning up is potentially a bigger deal than 10 lost votes!

Jason (post 5), those whose elections were questioned were not in the meeting that decided what action was taken, whether the same people would be returned was not part of the decision to follow the registrar's suggestions.

Post 9, more than 1 volunteer officer was there.
