York Sport fees angers snooker player

Yorkshire Rose
Friday, 28th November 2008
Mature student Steve Bradley has spoken out against what he describes as a “blatant” attempt to rip students off with the increased £40 York Sport membership fee.

As a member of the Pool and Snooker Club, Bradley has no access to any relevant facilities on campus and has to practice in an off-campus facility.

Nevertheless, he is currently required to pay the £40 membership to the Sports Centre in order to represent the University of York in BUCS fixtures.

He called the fee “immoral” and “nothing less than a stealth tax” and questioned the reasoning behind a £25 increase.

Bradley said: "I do not want to join the sports centre as there are no facilities for pool or snooker. Therefore to make joining it compulsory in order to represent the university is indeed a rip-off."

Bradley also claimed the hiked fee was subsidising other clubs that could use the facilities provided by the sports centre.

This accusation was strongly denied by York Sport Secretary Harry Collins in email correspondence with Bradley.

Collins said: “York Sport, and YUSU, supports all of its clubs equally and fairly and we do not appreciate accusations of bias towards or against any clubs”.

In October, Collins claimed Bradley’s opposition was the “only official complaint to be received from the entire two and a half thousand strong sporting body”. He also called the combined membership “the most practical and fair solution we believe exists”.

Steve Bradley was told by a BUCS representative that the organisation could consider appealing against York Sport’s refusal to let Bradley compete on the grounds of refusing to pay the fee.

Steve Bradley you pretentious fool - are you possibly the most patronising man in the world?

It seems to me that as a Holy 'mature' student, you see yourself as the saviour of 'poor freshers', too stupid to see through this "immoral" "stealth tax".

You may have a point, but your attitude in this matter reeks of an old man who really needs to stop thinking so much of himself.

On your bike.

Although the increased membership has riled numerous sportsmen and women, nothing can change until next year's budget is drawn up. Perhaps the more pressing issue for sports clubs currently is York Sport's rebranding program. Check out the sport section for the latest thoughts on this, and on Lacy.

To clarify what I've already said but for some reason it seems to have been missed...

The membership fee is combined as the Sports Centre would've put their fees up to £35, instead of £25, unless the York Sport Committee (at the time AU Exec) agreed to have a combined one. The AU Exec put this to an AUGM where the CLUBS voted for joint membership, as it would've cost the majority of clubs £50 per person per annum, instead of the £40 it now costs. This was pre-Alex Lacy, so how he's getting stick for it I don't know.

Very brave of you #21 to be abusive under the veil of anonymity. I fail to see what's pretentious or patronising about perhaps having a bit more life experience than other students. I know of two freshers who paid without question. They assumed it was just the norm.

Adam, I see your point - and I am also aware that for some bizarre reason this was voted in. But however you dress it up, members of clubs like snooker and pool who CANNOT use the sports centre surely cannot be expected to pay to join it? The more I think of it the less it makes sense!

Would you mind paying it for me Adam? I can't offer you anything in return for your £25 but I'm sorry that's the same as what you can offer me for my money.

Incidentally the reason I have raised this subject sometime after the event is because I was unaware of this change in policy until I nearly spilled coffee on my keyboard when I was about to renew my AU membership and noticed that the figures 1 and 5 had been replaced with 4 and 0.

Adam

If the Sports Centre were going to take their charge up to £35, they should have been allowed to do just that, regardless of whether the majority of whether the majority of clubs were willing to let those who don't use the sports centre subsidise it for them or not.

The face that a vote was passed is neither here nor there, it makes it no fairer. Of course the majority of people will have voted in favour of the joint fee, because the majority of people have ended up only needing to pay £40 instead of £50, and the minority have to pay £40 instead of £15.

This is a case where majority rule isn't fair, and Yorksport should be making an autocratic decision on the matter in the interest of fairness. Students that which to use the sports centre should have to pay for it themselves, or their club should subsidise it, it's in indefensible to allow people who don't use those facilities to pay a proportion of the costs for others.

Steve - maybe you should do what I did and use it as an opportunity to get down the gym, might do you some good

I would still be a fiver better off if I just paid the £35 sports centre fee but had the choice to not join the AU
