Police investigate sexual assault of York student

Police
Wednesday, 19th November 2008
A University student was the victim of a serious sexual assault last night on Heslington Lane, police are still looking for the suspect.

The police were called at 9.45pm last night following reports that a 21 year-old female student suffered a "serious sexual assault".

The assault took place between 8.30pm and 8.45pm on Heslington Lane accross from the Fulford Golf Club.

The student was walking in the direction of Heslington from Fulford, when the attacker pulled her into the bushes, threatened her and then sexually assaulted her.

After managing to break free from her attacker, the victim ran to a friend's house in the Heslington area before calling the police.

She suffered scratches to her face and was described by police as being "very shaken and upset by the incident."

The attacker is described as white, between 5ft 10in and 6ft tall, with short black hair and a broad Yorkshire accent. He is aged between 30 and 40.

According to the police the area "is believed to have been busy at the time of the incident with students playing sports on adjacent pitches."

This incident follows a series of attacks which took place earlier in the term in the area around Halifax College.

The University is urging students not to travel alone and to be aware of their surroundings. Students are also being advised to carry a personal alarm (free on request from the Students' Union) and take taxis or use the 'Magic Bus' run by YUSU.

Anyone who may have any information regarding the incident is urged to contact York CID on 0845 60 60 247.

Really doesn't sound like she was lying :( "shaken and upset" isn't easily faked in front of police who regularly deal with this sort of thing.
