B Henry's to stay open

Alcuin1
Thursday, 20th November 2008
It has been announced that B Henry's will stay open for at least one more term next year while a more thorough consultation process takes place.

The decision was made following a Student Services Committee (SSC) meeting today. Alcuin JCR chair Erik O'Connor told The Yorker: "I'm really really pleased, this is great news."

It was agreed in the meeting to reconvene the Bars Strategy Group which will have B Henry's as its first piece of business. The group will report back to the next SSC on 26 February with a recommendation to either keep the bar open or close it permanently.

University Pro Vice-Chancellor Jane Grenville, was responsible for making this decision. She told The Yorker: "This restores the consultation process that students felt had been by-passed in this case."

O'Connor added: "It's a testament to hard work from my committee, other committees and other students. I'm glad we can work with the uni on this and that it won't be a battle."

At the latest UGM, the motion 'Save B Henrys And Retain Bar Provision On Campus' passed by an overwhelming margin. The results were 658 for, 16 against and 8 abstentions.

As reported earlier, Alcuin Provost Tony Ward was informed earlier in the term of Commercial Services' plans to close B Henry's. YUSU as well as Alcuin JCRC voiced a strong opposition to the idea and had been campaigning against the decision.

It's only open 8 hours a week and it's never busy, I'm not sure anyone would even notice if Commercial Services closed it.

Nice to be anonymous, isn't it... shows that you don't care what people think of you. *sighs*

The vast majority of students want it to stay open. 2.3% voted against it? Ridiculous that they could even consider closing it - it's a service as much as it is a bar. It has been losing money, perhaps, but they've still been using dodgy numbers and quoting even dodgier ones.

The university is a collegiate university. Every college should have a bar and a food outlet. That's how it should be... and the university thinks that the massive profit they're making from Derwent can't subsidise Alcuin for some reason (plus if you include the food outlet, Alcuin's making a profit anyway).

Come on university, think about what you're doing - and stop wondering why your ratings from student assessments are low!

Jason, please refrain from slagging off those who choose to post anonymously. If you must rebuke them, rebuke what they say not how they identify themselves.

Whilst i am delighted that B Henry's will remain open for at least another term, all of the ideas and proposals put forward in the Alcuin Extraordinary Open Meeting need to be considered. Therefore there is definitely no time for complacency, and for us to put forward Plan B, to ensure the bars' long term survival. The hard work will really take place when the next JCRC takes office.

No. I will rebuke those who post anonymously because they choose to. I will not slag someone off because of their name or identity - i.e. attack a post because of who wrote it - but I am more than happy to suggest that people posting anonymously are only doing so because they don't want people to know that's their view. It's silly.

And I did rebuke what s/he said in my second paragraph. 97.7% voted against it closing so OBVIOUSLY people would notice.

But yes, I agree with Hamish - this isn't the end. There's still a reviewing process and we have to work hard to show that it's a valued part of the university.

The percentage of the vote is irrelevant - I'd suggest that the vast majority of that 97.7% have never actually stepped foot in Alcuin Bar. For a college that is supposedly trying to save it's bar, I haven't seen many JCRC members (or anybody really) in there on Tuesday/Friday nights. It asks the question, does anybody really care that much if an under-used, poorly located bar is actually needed at all?

I think the real question is why are the University lying about the figures - what is their agenda and why are they pushing for it?

You either don't know any Alcuin JCRC members or haven't actually been in B Henry's for a while. It's been quite busy recently, especially on Tuesday's for the quiz (I'm there every Tuesday and there's always quite a few people there, including many JCRC members).

People do obviously care (look at all the posters in windows in alcuin and all the chalk 'PLAN B's all over campus) and if you don't, why are you posting here? Will it really be THAT bad if B Henry's remains open, making very many people happy?

#6 I have to say it's pretty damn well located for Alcuin students, it's prime target, whilst all the other campus bars are poorly located for them.

Could do with a bit more advertising for Quiz Night, etc.
