Radical degree changes proposed

Central Hall
Saturday, 22nd November 2008
A series of radical proposals have been put forward by leading academics following a review ordered by the Government.

A total of nine reports were submitted to the government last week. The most radical suggestions included scrapping firsts and recruiting students all year round instead of just in September/October.

Paul Ramsden, chief executive of the Higher Education Academy, proposed the end of firsts in his report. Ramsden suggested issuing report cards instead of classing degrees as firsts, 2:1s, 2:2s or thirds.

Ramsden said: "The present system of classification was designed for a smaller higher education world. It does not describe the range of knowledge, skills, experience and attributes of a graduate in the 21st century."

Christine King, Vice-Chancellor of Staffordshire University, advocated enrolment for part-time students all year round.

She said: "We have to recognise the majority of higher level skills will be acquired on a part-time basis. The higher education sector will need to adapt its calendars and working practices to accommodate the flexibility that part-time students need."

Other proposals included building campuses overseas, rating universities on the quality of graduate jobs and providing part-time students with the same grants and loans full-time students receive.

A report submitted by Universities UK expressed concern over ageing academics. It predicts that one in six will retire in the next decade.

Why is losing 1 in 6 academics over the course of a decade problematic? Sounds like a fairly healthy turnover to me.
