A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Danielle Fill: I'm running for Vanbrugh Chair because I believe in the collegiate system and feel I have the drive, passion, knowledge and experience to continue the great work the current JCRC has achieved! I want to make sure that Vanbrugh college spirit continues to grow so that the pressures of the YUSU bar and other external forces don't rid York University of its colleges!
Will Scobie: I am running for Vanbrugh Chair because I feel the college has given so much to me over the last year, and I would like to give something back. I also feel that I have the experience to be Chair as I have worked in the European Parliament for the last two summers, and I was Chair of my Student Union in my Sixth Form College.
DF: Obviously the YUSU bar opening in Langwith is going to make us need to work harder than ever! Events are one of our biggest incomes and by already having to reduce the number of events we have because they are at much higher risk of making a loss, we will have a reduced budget to spend on Vanbrugh students.
WS: I think the biggest issue facing Vanbrugh is the looming threat of the new Langwith SU bar which means that V bar needs to keep competitive. V bar is the heartbeat of Vanbrugh college, and if we lose that we lose part of our identity. Therefore we need concrete policies and commitments to keep V bar going strong.
DF: The possible loss of the collegiate system! York prides itself on having colleges, it makes it different from most of the other universities in Britain. It gives opportunities that may not be there otherwise. For example when I tell friends at other universities that I organise campus events, they don't understand how I can because they don't have opportunities to do so.
WS: The biggest issue facing the university is the need to retain our college structure and so not lose our college identities. With college bars closing down, we need our college structure more than ever as I feel they are the best way of keeping people involved.
Quick Fire
DF: To increase college spirit and give back what I have recieved as being part of Vanbrugh!
WS: Sky TV for the JCR
DF: Le Page
WS: Barbara Scott Court, Block D
DF: Ents Rep

DF: There's too many!
WS: Standing in the smoking area at Tru at the start of this year with 40 or so freshers screaming, "Vanbrugh till I die!"
Vanbrugh elections are now open and close Friday Week 9.
No disrespect to Will, but I can't think of anyone who would be a better Chair for Vanbrugh than Dani Fill. She knows everything and everyone when it comes to getting the best for Vanbrugh students, and has shown this last year just how hard she'll work to do that!
go fill!
Scobes is a beautifull blueberry muffin. In reality, the Vanbrugh JCR 'clique' are just worried about someone coming in with fresh ideas. I heard about what happened at hustings, like a pack of hyenas, it makes me sick! Socbes is a god among men and he will not be denied! WILLPOWER!
How about "For #5" pipe down.
Dani has a hell of a lot of supporters and I don't post things anonymously on here.
Love,
Kate Taylor
Dear #4, so far this campaign has been riddled with some pretty bad behaviour on both sides and not i would say by either candidate, and all it does is damage both parties. #1 is perfectly entitled to explain his or her views in support of a candidate and made no derogatory comments and I'm sure you would offer far more benefit to Will's campaign by doing the same.
I agree hustings was not ideal, but i will more than gladly sit down with anyone who would contend that either of the Returning Officers were biased in any way and it is they who control the debate. Having spoken to both candidates after the event, both Will AND Dani were unhappy with the questioning and neither felt like they were advantaged by it, if anything quite the opposite. Those who made specific points were doing so of their own volition and not as officers of the JCRC. Any 'cliqueyness' has not and will not be permitted in a meeting I Chair and if you feel otherwise i will gladly meet with you to discuss your concerns and take steps accordingly. You may or may not know that any and all JCR meetings are open for any member of the College to attend, and i would invite you to do so. No ideas from any source that would benefit students would ever be disregarded.
I would beg all the supporters of the candidates to remember that 'Student Politics' is more about 'students' than it is about 'politics' and that is all too often forgotten. As far as i can ascertain both candidates have the best intentions for student wellbeing so for the sake of my sanity if nothing else can everyone just stop wrangling and remember what it is that we're all trying to do here which is make things better for students. We will find out on Saturday who the majority of students think is the best candidate, and then all that this hot air will have achieved is to make people feel more bitter in the long run.
I agree with Matt, and, as he said before, VOTE DANI !!
#8 I don't think I heard Matt stating VOTE DANI? Or was I away for that part?!
Don't make vague and possibly contentious statements!
I don't see how #8 is vague, it seems pretty clear to me. I trust Matt Oliver, so if he says VOTE DANI, that's what I'll do!
Vote Matt!
I'm amused that people think this will help people "vote Dani"... that people who read the Yorker aren't likely to have made their minds up and vote early anyway.
