A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The excitement of students was clear to see prior to the opening, as pre-sale tickets sold out in 48 hours.
On the night, 30 tickets were available on the door, but there were far more than 30 students queuing for them.
One student in the queue told The Yorker: "We came here really early and we were really scared we wouldn’t get tickets, but we’re in the first 30 so we might get tickets. I’m so excited, first YUSU bar for like 50 years! Come on YUSU!"
Those tickets sold out very quickly, and the bar reached capacity not long afterwards. The students who were lucky enough to get inside seemed impressed with what they saw.
In one way it has been 18 months of hard work to get here, but in another it has been 45 years.
A second year PPE student commented: "I was really worried about the bar actually; I thought it would look too formal but it looks really nice, I really like it. It definitely exceeded my expectations, it’s so much nicer than I thought it would be."
The opening ceremony for exclusive guests took place earlier in the day, at 3pm. Attendees included alumni and members of YUSU, the ISA, and the GSA. John Randell, the first YUSU President, was invited to cut the ribbon at the ceremony.
Randell expressed high hopes for the bar, saying: "It’s great, particularly if it will bring students back onto the campus, that would be really good."
It feels like being in the city or somewhere else, and it shows what you can do with a bit of effort and a bit of money
He added: "Forty years ago, it was almost unheard of for students to drink in town. It was even remarked on, in my year as student president, I drank in town, nobody else did. Social life revolved around the college bars, and each bar had its own character."
YUSU Services and Finance Officer Matt Burton was delighted by the turnout, both at the opening ceremony and the evening party.
He said: "This is what makes it worth it, we had the opening this afternoon and this party now and everyone’s been just over the moon with it, and it feels like a really nice space to be in. It feels like being in the city or somewhere else, and it shows what you can do with a bit of effort and a bit of money."
YUSU President Tom Scott offered similar sentiments in an interview with URY, saying: "In one way it has been 18 months of hard work to get here, but in another it has been 45 years. We’re starting a new chapter for the university and the students' union, and it’s going to be fantastic."
Really, really impressed by the venue!
Easily the best bar on campus and could be a real winner!
Indeed, the best bar on campus by a very long shot. Even better than most bars in town I'd say, but that could just be the initial excitement.
In any case, this is truly a landmark for YUSU, for york students and for the university. All those who have made it possible deserve praise for their work.
I was very impressed with the new bar, and think it will be a huge boost to the student population. Congratulations to everyone involved from myself and the GSA exec.
It's pretty nice, not as cheap as I'd hoped though.
I think that substantially undercutting the other bars could have been risky - and don't forget that the profit comes to us anyway! Hopefully the decor and the events will want to make people come here
Like the comedy night, this evening >.>
Which Jason, rather ironically, neglects to mention is free!

Does he do anything remotely pirate-like anymore?
No, he was wearing a suit and everything :( Rumour has it Matt Burton vetoed it
I actually typed that it was free and then decided to scrap that because I wasn't completely certain...
And you're right. We need to get Tom Scott to go to the NUS conference tomorrow in pirate gear. Someone get a petition going
I think we should be taken seriously at NUS.
Fair enough to get dressed up for other occasions, it's a laugh, but not NUS.
It cost me £2.30 for a pint of Smith's, even though I'd heard it was meant to be the same as other campus bars (which charge £1.85).
I won't be going back in a hurry for that - though the decor is nice, and the space has been mightily improved from the previous Langwith bar.
I was kidding about the NUS. Btw here's Tom's response (at end): HERE
Really nice decor but more expensive than the other campus bars (and a few in town). But i suppose this extra money (theoretically) goes to a better cause.
Best of luck.
It's only been open 4 days. Keep your eyes peeled for fresh drinks offers soon.
How could the committees of the University's student proto-political 'elite' possibly swallow 500k£ of our money only to regurgitate this shallow mockery of a bar, and with high prices to boot?
Bit harsh with that last comment? Students had plenty of chances to debate whether they wanted a bar and at every occasion it was a resounding yes.
Although there may be some slight disagreements over a few issues regarding The Courtyard, the fact that students at the University finally have a bar truly run for them is something we all should celebrate.
to be fair, 500k is quite a s****d of money..
