Student to go on 3-day hunger strike

Campus
Saturday, 24th January 2009
A University of York student is to go on a 3-day hunger strike to protest against and draw attention to climate change.

Third year PPE student Tom Daltas begins his hunger strike today, Sunday 25th January, and will be ingesting nothing but water until Wednesday.

Daltas said: "The point I am trying to get across is that there is an enormous gap between what recent climate science demands and what the government is doing to protect us and our environment."

He added: "By protesting through hunger strike I hope to bring this fact to people's attention and to put them in touch with the sort of information that will enable them to make a genuine difference through their capacity as citizens."

During his hunger strike Daltas plans to spend most of the day outside Vanbrugh and to sleep in one of the college common rooms.

In the Facebook group created by Daltas he sets out as one of his aims "to promote genuine environmentally responsible consumption, recently dubbed 'ecotarianism'."

He explains that 'ecotarianism' is as much a political as it is an environmental movement and adds that "under liberal government and capitalist markets, the vote we cast with our money can be far more potent in driving change than our political vote".

Or getting involved with YUSU's Ethical and Environmental work, or joining a local group doing something proactive, or doing a display showing students what practical steps they can take ... or loads of tings that actually make a difference!

I don't know about you guys, but I always get a lot of flatulence from not eating for a while... And flatulence means Methane, a big nono for the environment!

absolutely ridiculous, if he wants to raise awareness hold a fundraising event or sit in vanbrugh stalls and hand out leaflets and bring people closer to the cause rather than sitting outside in the cold not eating and completely missing the point. besides, there's plenty of indications that the government is starting to give issues of sustainability the recognition and attention they deserve.

admirable cause, rubbish gesture.

people are missing the point completely...

either you agree or disagree with this symbolic act, I think we should all respect his decisions, especially when those entail not eating for 72 hours.

you'll be missing the point if you try to analyse this symbolic gesture. that's why it's symbolic in the first place.
