Baroness Afshar to speak at the House of Lords

Haleh Afshah
Wednesday, 4th February 2009
The politics lecturer has been invited to participate in a debate on the situation in Gaza this Friday at the House of Lords, where she has spoken many times before.

The Baroness has also been allowed to bring some of her politics students from the University of York to watch the debate live in London.

Approximately 30 of her students from the university will be going on Friday, most of them from her 'Islam and the Middle East' class.

One of the students said: "This is really exciting, such a great opportunity for us. We've been studying this subject for weeks, and to get to see people debating at this level will be just incredible!"

Afshar (OBE) is a lecturer in the university's politics department and specializes in Islam and Middle Eastern and women's politics. She is a crossbench peer in the House of Lords.

Surely not!?!
Do they let Baronesses into the House of Lords now?
Whatever next?

I think my favourite part is:

"where she has spoken many times before."

Which further cements what a non-story this really is.

Don't you think it's interesting to know what lecturers are up to outside of the uni? Especially ones as well respected as Baroness Afshar. I think it's good to be able to fit academics into a national, and even global context. And I really hope that first comment was not meant to be a serious one

#3,
She's a Baroness. Look it up in an Encyclopaedia. I don't think we need to be told that she speaks in the House of Lords. It's more of a story if she didnt - that being her job and all. But you knew that, right?
