Labour Cabinet Minister comes to speak at York

Hilary Benn
Thursday, 12th February 2009
This Friday will see Hilary Benn, current Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural affairs, come to speak at the university.

The event is being hosted by the University of York Labour Club.

The topic that will be addressed is "Can we build a sustainable community?"

Labour Club Chair David Levene expressed his excitement about the talk. Levene said: "It's great to have Hilary up in York - environmental issues are rightly at the top of the political agenda."

He added: "Having Hilary here provides a great opportunity to convince students that if you really want to vote green, vote red."

Third-year Claire Hazelgrove, who is Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for Skipton and Ripon, expressed similar sentiments for her fellow party member.

Hazelgrove told The Yorker: "It is incredibly important for government ministers to communicate with people of all ages as well as hear their ideas.

"That's why I'm pleased, yet not surprised, that Hilary Benn has again found time in his busy schedule to come and speak with students here about one of the most crucial topics of debate facing us as a society today."

Benn has held his current position as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs since June 2007. His previous positions include being an MP for Leeds Central and Minister for Prisons and Probation.

Benn comes from a family of politicians, with his father Tony Benn a former Labour Cabinet Minister. His niece, Emily Benn, is the youngest prospective parliamentary candidate in UK history, having been selected to stand as the Labour candidate for East Worthing and Shoreham.

The event is being held in P/L/001 at 18:00 on Friday 13th February.

December? Either The Yorker are slipping quite a lot further behind, or they're really on the ball. I can't decide

They should get panto-hating automatons like we have at Nouse, it's a lot more efficient.

Sounds like another coup following James Purnell's visit to York back in December. If Benn is snowed in and it has to be cancelled, any chance of someone who is organising the event posting a message on the yorker to save some of us making a wasted journey through the snow? Would be much appreciated

It's still on as far as I've heard. Will update you if I hear otherwise though and am now going to be listening out

I thought he spoke quite impressively, and dealt very well with some quite rude interruptions from members of the audience.

I concur

I also had a particular liking of James Townsend using the word "chap" in his question

I totally agree with #8 - he was very impressive, and although the event was supposed to discuss environmental issues and sustainability he dealt with questions outside of those topics in an honest manner.

It was a shame that certain members of the audience could not distinguish between asking someone a question and giving their own speech, despite Benn consistently offering people the right of reply so they did not have to interrupt him.
