* Previous experience?
Daniel Carr: I've been a GSA Sports Officer since October, and Acting President since December. Before that I sat on a number of important university committees. Taking both periods into consideration I've been a representative on all the relevant top-level university bodies. I've also represented YUSU to the National Union of Students and the GSA to the National Postgraduate Committee.
Jonathan Kidner: Been a leader of academic appeals, and have won against injustice served by the university.
* Why are you running?
DC: Having been Acting President for the past couple of months, I've developed a real zest for the job. When I took the role on, I didn't expect to run for the permanent position, but I've really enjoyed the work and have become convinced that I can do it really well. It's such a crucial point for the GSA now that getting involved means I can make a meaningful, lasting contribution to graduate life at York, and that's what I hope to achieve.
JK: A serious task requires a person serious about getting the job done. I seriously believe I am the man for the job.
* What do you think is the biggest issue for postgraduates this year?
DC: It's hard to say, because there are so many key issues we need representation on, and as an organisation the GSA just hasn't tried hard enough to get people's opinions. From a GSA perspective I'd say the biggest issue is sorting that out, engaging with all our members rather than just a few, and basing the work we do and the campaigns we run on what postgrads really think. We've started doing that with focus groups, but it needs to go much further.
JK: Workload & Representation.
Quick Fire:
* Key policy?
DC: Developing our interaction with our members, so that we really know what they want from us and can act on it.
JK: Clearer communication between the GSA and graduates.
* Favourite York memory?
DC: The night of Obama's election was amazing, among other things. York has been very kind to me.
JK: Maybe it's too incriminating to be published! We have a great team on my course with numerous fantastic social events.
* Guilty pleasure?
DC: I have a real taste for pear cider. I don't feel too guilty about it though.
JK: To be in a position of greater awareness, though I don't feel guilty because of it.
* Dream Job?
DC: Playing football for Newcastle. And it could well become reality if they keep playing as badly as they are now!
JK: Don't believe there is such a thing.
Brown or Cameron?
DC: Party politics and student representation are a bad mix, so I'm going to say Obama. Sorry...
JK: Liberal Democrats; it's like taking part, but you know it's not going to do anything.
Dan for President!
Regardless of who gets in, there is a massive job ahead of them to get the GSA down-to-earth and efficient. The next President may find that they are doing a heavy-duty job with little publicity of reward!
