A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Please note, these are only rumours and the students listed have not spoken to The Yorker.
Candidates are not permitted to campaign until Tuesday week 8.
Langrish would certainly stand a good chance in the election, having a wealth of experience. He is the current YUSU Policy and Campaigns Officer with Michael Batula, and is also currently the Chair of YUSU Council and a GSA Returning Officer.
His previous experience includes positions as Alcuin Vice-Chair for Welfare and Support and YUSU Training Officer last year. Additionally, he has been a History Board of Studies Rep since 2006.
Third-year English student Matt Oliver was the Vanbrugh Chair last year. He is also a keen sports player, and was part of the Vanbrugh football side that won the 2nds League last year.
Oliver is very popular within his college, but only time will tell how far that popularity reaches outside Vanbrugh.
Third-year History and Politics student Dan Taylor is perhaps most famous for the incident which led to Grace Fletcher-Hackwood being no-confidenced last year. His previous experience includes his position as Derwent Vis Ents Rep last year with Will Marle.
Taylor is also a regular for the Derwent rugby team. He was due to run for Services and Finance Officer last year, promising to give Matt Burton "a good run for his money", but he withdrew at the last minute.

Ben Wilkins for President, I heard
I heard that Samuel Houlders is putting in a late bid for a position. What position, i hear you ask... who knows!
What's your favourite posish? That's cool with me, it's not my favourite but I'll do it for you.
What's your favorite dish? I'm not going to cook it but i'll order it from ZANZIBAR!!!!
I quite like the idea of a well tanned lady in office...
me too, shes fit!
Who the hell is Jenny Coyle?!?
Im involved in welfare and Ive never even heard of her, so she cant have done that much.
Also can we move away from this shameless self advertising which is obviously being done by her and her friends - people aren't interested!!!
Other than that, good luck to all the candidates.
xx
I am involved in welfare as well, and I have never heard of Jenny Coyle either.
I am not sure if that person actually intends to run, but I do certainly hope that she does not run like a joke candidate.
Dislike student politics as we may, I think we have to appreciate that the position of welfare officer actually entails a certain level of responsibility.
Running as a joke candidate would only show a huge disregard for that position and for welfare support in general, which I hope is not the case for anyone in this university.
It is I, #41 under the guise of a new number. And ‘obviously’? I’m afraid you are sadly misinformed #49, I merely thought it prudent to give an untried and untested candidate a chance, rather than dispelling them from thought simply because ‘#50’ visited the odd welfare meeting and hasn’t heard of her. Rafael Nadal and Boris Becker won grand slam’s without prior experience in those competitions, why can’t this ‘coyle’ character follow in their illustrious footsteps? Xoxo gossip girl
Because the consequences of her failure would not damage herself but others. Which brings us back into responsibility, as the welfare network is not a tennis tournament.
I do not know that person either and I will not in any way make a judgment about her, but the way you portray her (i.e. as an inexperienced candidate who thinks it'd be a bit of a joke to be entrusted with student welfare and run the welfare network) seriously concerns me.
Remember, for some of last year we didn't have an Academic and Welfare Officer at all.
As a matter of fact, former president Anne-Marie Canning was doing the job of welfare officer for that time, at the great expense of her personal well-being as she had to keep up with two full time jobs.
I find the comments towards Jenny Coyle highly inappropriate. To say she has no welfare experience is incorrect. Jenny is the co-founder of Tanning Soc, which promotes the use of self tanning products and not the use of sunbeds. Jenny gained sponsorship from two major international companies (St Tropez and L'Oreal) in order to help promote this welfare message to the students of the University of York.
Jenny Coyle is my hero
This is actually disgusting to read - why do you insist on acting like this. Just wait for the actual election campaigning to start rather than making such stupid statements. You're obvious just Jenny Coyle or close friends and i'm already being put off from Coyle even though I've never met her.
Tanning soc sounds like a load of tosh - its hardly the kind of experience that student welfare requires.
You call tanning soc 'a load of tosh' even though it raises money for skin cancer research uk. What a delightful human being you are...
Before commenting on a society being 'a load of tosh' how about actually getting your facts right in the first place!
And i am sure if Jenny Coyle is taking her nomination for YUSU welfare seriously then she will have nothing to do with these anonymous posts.
