Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
An additional 33,678 students applied to university this year, bringing the total number of applications up to 464,167.
NUS President Wes Streeting said: "It is hugely encouraging to see a record-breaking number of applications to Britain's universities, but we remain concerned about the lack of places available as a result of the cap on numbers imposed by the Government."
Universities Secretary John Denham said last month that additional student places for 2009 would be capped at 10,000. It had previously been thought that an extra 15,000 places would be available this year.
Denham told universities that they needed to stop over-recruiting, and warned them that they would face financial penalties if they did not.
Streeting said that he understood the pressure expansion would place on public finances, but added: "Unless there is an urgent expansion of places, universities will be unable to meet this demand."
Chief Executive of Universities UK Diana Warwick expressed her delight at the increased demand. Warwick said: "These are very encouraging figures. Applicants are making informed choices and thinking carefully about the value of higher education, particularly in the current economic climate."
Higher Education Minister David Lammy, however, expressed concern over the figures. He said: "With nearly 8% more people applying to university and colleges in England than this time last year, it is clear that even in these more challenging times people recognise the value of a degree and the investment in their future career."
