RAG Week ends on a high

RAG Week 2009
Wednesday, 18th February 2009
Saturday saw RAG Week end with a bang, with the parade in town, and RAG Love in the Courtyard in the evening.

The theme of this year's RAG parade was Through the Ages, and over 500 students from all eight colleges turned out dressed as everything from Celts to Robots.

The Vice-Chancellor, along with the Sheriff of York, judged the best dressed college, with Alcuin, dressed as Cavemen, claiming the prize for the second year in a row.

As well as the procession through town and a large amount of money collection for RAG's six charities, there were a range of other entertainments.

The Zamar Gospel Choir, the Dave Smyth Jazz trio and excerpts from York Come Dancing all appeared on the main stage, and Student Action provided face painting in a stall in the main square.

RAG parade organiser Zoe Stones told The Yorker: "It was a fantastic day with a brilliant turnout. We're still in the lengthy counting process, but there have been tins with over £100 each in them, so we're hopeful!"

RAG Chair Helen Adams was thrilled with the turnout, expressing an especial delight at "traditionally less spirited colleges really looking very impressive".

Saturday evening brought RAG Love in association with The Courtyard, the event that brought RAG week to a close. The event sold out, raising even more money for RAG.

Adams was impressed with how well the event went, saying that there was "such a good atmosphere, and the RAG tags and chocolate fountains were highly successful additions. Even L/N/028 looked like a convincing club venue with all those Valentine's helium balloons!"

There are more buckets yet to be counted and more meetings about Fusion/RAG and YUSU/RAG profit splits following Wall St Crash and Viking Raid, and so the final figures for the week are yet to be announced.
