A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
YUSU Environment & Ethics Officer John Nicholls said: "Climate change is a major threat, but there is still time to stop its worst effects."
He added: "We hope Green Week will highlight the seriousness of the problem, but also the many different ways in which we as students can be part of the solution."
Joe Thwaites, also a YUSU Environment & Ethics Officer, stressed the importance of addressing the issue, saying: "The effects of climate change will impact on almost every aspect of our lives - the economy, transport, energy, health, defence and development - and mostly in negative ways."
Addressing the numerous issues surrounding climate change, the week will start with a free film viewing of An Inconvenient Truth, followed by a question and answer session with Dr Edward Hanna, senior lecturer in climate change from the University of Sheffield.
On Tuesday there will be an opportunity to pick up free eco goodie bags and purchase tickets for George Marshall’s one man show at the York Theatre Royal entitled Carbon Detox.
Wednesday will see two further lectures on carbon footprinting and how to reduce it, as well as the Environment and Ethics Committee open meeting.
A lecture on the dangers of biofuel, by Deepak Rughani of Biofuelwatch, will be held on Thursday.
On Friday, NGS will hold a Question Time debate on how we can tackle climate change, with panellists including the Labour MP Colin Challen, author of Too Little Too Late: the politics of climate change and Oliver Tickell, author of Kyoto2.
The Liberal Democrat and Green Party candidates for York Central will also be involved.
The final event, Jungle D, presented by Club D in collaboration with YUSU’s Environment and Ethics Committee will be held on Saturday week 8, tying in with the end of fairtrade fortnight.
