A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The buildings built by BAM will be occupied by the Department of Theatre, Film & Television, the Department of Computer Science, the York Law School and the York Management School.
They will be the centrepiece of Phase One, and will cost around £66 million.
BAM will also construct ‘The Hub’ – a four-storey high building that will act as a nucleus for the development and hold up to 1,333 people.
The aim of 'The Hub' will be to bring together researchers, staff, knowledge transfer companies, students and the public.
The University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Estates, Elizabeth Heaps, said: "These stunning buildings will be the focus of academic activity in the first phase of Heslington East."
Matthew Garnett has been appointed by BAM as the Project Manager for all four structures. Garnett said: "This is a really big and exciting challenge and we have drawn up a staggered programme to start and hand-over the buildings successively.
"Work will start soon on the Theatre, Film and Television Department building, and all the new facilities will be completed in time for October 2010. They will have a variety of different and striking facades and will be visually very arresting."
Garnett's previous project was The Grammar School at Leeds.
A scenic stage theatre, a black box theatre, a screening room and TV studios with audio and editing suites will be included in the Theatre, Film and Television building.
The Computer Science building will provide space for teachers, departmental offices and software laboratories, while the Law and Management building will contain lecture theatres, seminar rooms, Problem Based Learning space, departmental offices and knowledge transfer facilities.
Garnett expressed the belief that the project will be beneficial for local residents, saying: "The University and BAM have a number of initiatives planned during the lifespan of the construction work that we hope will engage and benefit the wider community."
October 2010? You've got to be joking?!?
I reckon it will be done by July 2013, or at least I won't be holding my breath over it.
The summary's a bit misleading - BAM aren't building the first phase, they're only building the first academic buildings - Goodricke is being built by Shepherd - http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/presspr/pressreleases/shepherd.htm
Re:#1
I believe that this is in line with the timetable that the university previously published and that Goodricke is on schedule. I am also skeptical about specific things i.e. assuming things will be built when they might not or neglecting to build essentials etc... but it doesn't look really late yet.
What on earth is the hub including btw?
All of this talk of fancy buildings is great, but I have yet to see adequate plans that ensure sufficient student facilities will be constructed on Hes East.
Apparently there might not even be a cashpoint over there???
Rumour has it, and I don't recall having heard a final resolution on the issue at the last Student Services Subcomittee I attended. I haven't been to one for quite a while though so it's probably worth checking with the uni or YUSU.
I don't understand why these plans are in the dark though. It's not like there's any sensitive information in there or anything.
The plans aren't in the dark, they're available on the Council website.

Owned! Thanks for that link, one of the best I've got indeed.
I don't think there are plans for a cashpoint as the banks consider the current Heslington & Campus provision as being adequate to cover the new residents in Hes East. Until the hub opens, I don't think there will be anything to spend money on in Hes East anyway (excluding Efes delivery). Tom x
Wouldn't you just love to be one of the Hes East en-suite owners? Your room cost less to build than almost any other on campus, you've got no food facilities or cashpoint and you're paying maximum tariff rate for accomodation...
