Ex-Sugababe to perform in International Week

Mutya Buena
Sunday, 22nd February 2009
Former Sugababe Mutya Buena will be performing at the Fiesta Afterparty as part of International Week.

Buena, who is of Filipino, Spanish and Irish descent, will be performing this Saturday at the final event of International Week, in Vanbrugh.

This will mark the first time the ISA have collaborated on an event with the college.

ISA Vice-President Lizzouli Rojas expressed her excitement about the Fiesta and Buena's impending performance.

Rojas told The Yorker: "Fiesta has an excellent track record of selling out each year and we believe this year's event has the potential to be the most successful yet!

"This is especially due to the quality of this year’s event schedule which includes a performance from a MOBO Award nominated and gold-selling artist, Mutya Buena. It has been a while since the York campus has played host to an artist who has made two top 10 hits in the space of a year."

Fiesta will be preceded by a number of other events, several of which are new this year. These include an international movie marathon and an international bar quiz, to be held on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

The ISA will also be hosting Unwind on Friday, a chill-out event where students will be able to get a massage, listen to acoustic music and get a henna tattoo. A similar event was held during Freshers Week.

ISA President Adam Malik said: "We have been working really hard to put this together and it is going to be the most event-packed international week yet.

"We have events on every night of the week! We are really excited, it should be an incredible week."

The first event of the week will be the Cultural Performance Night on Monday, featuring acts performed by Japanese, Kazakhstani, Lithuanian, Thai, Malaysian, Chinese, and Latin American students.

Malik added: "This really exemplifies the international identity of the university."

On Tuesday, the ISA will be hosting an international debate night in collaboration with York Union Debating Society and Club of PEP.

Entitled "This House believes that York should no longer invest in the arms trade", the debate will focus on the university’s unfulfilled promise to stop investing in the arms trade.

I think her name might be Beuna or Buena, but probably not both... Not that I really care...

The fact this event is going to be run at a loss undermines all other college events that struggle to break even.

First of all, why do you assume that this event is going to run at a loss?

Secondly, why would the ISA's budget have anything to do with regular college events?

It doesn't really matter how much she cost, the event overall was a success!
