A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The tournament involved a series of challenges to test 36 students in their business and enterprise skills, with a £650 prize for the winner and an opportunity for work experience in the development of a national ad campaign with Northern Rail.
The first challenge took the form of the classic 'paperclip' trade, where students were required to negotiate and trade their way up from a standard paperclip to the highest obtainable value.
As a true test of worth, the final item would need to be sold within one hour. The items procured included a pair of Marc Jacobs shoes worth £400 RRP, a one night stay in the Hotel 53 including complementary breakfast for two, a PlayStation 2, and various 26 inch screen TVs and DVD players.
The teams then had two hours to sell the items on campus as a true test of their monetary value. The hotel room went for a mere £60 whilst one lucky girl bought the designer shoes for £20.
After this, five teams were dropped and, due to a tie-breaker between 5th and 6th position down to the very penny, seven teams ended up being put through to the second round.
The second challenge took place last Friday, and involved each team going into town to buy a list of 10 items that added up to an RRP of £60 for the cheapest price possible. The items included champagne, six real red roses, a T-shirt with the team’s photo printed on, plus a mystery item.
The winning team, ‘FSA Here We Come’, managed to buy the whole list for £14.42. They negotiated and managed to purchase a bottle of Moët Champagne from 1331, printed t-shirts for 1p and £10 hair salon gift voucher for 1p each. They also managed to get a free lunch from McDonalds.
The event turned out to be even better than York Entrepreneurs had expected, President Suraj Gangani saying: "The most amazing thing about our challenges are the competitors, who never fail to overwhelm us with their results.
"From paper clips to designer shoes and selling on market stalls, it seems we can never underestimate the ability of the students."
Deej Kapoor, a member of the winning team, commented: "We found the tasks challenging, but coupling our knowledge of the city with our business acumen proved vital in our team's success."
