A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Chris Etheridge: We're running on the basis of a significant amount of experience. I was Chairman of my Sixth Form Council between 2006 and 2007 and in charge of a budget of £10,000. I've also been Treasurer of York Tories for two consecutive years and was the founder of the Humanitarian Aid for Gaza (York) campaign, which has raised £2500 for the innocent victims of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Jason Rose: I am currently on Communications Committee, Rules and Regulations Committee, Campaigns Committee, Environment and Ethics Committee; was the Board of Studies Officer and sat on YUSU Senate (now Council) until last term, am a YUSU trustee and also a member of the University Senate.
I successfully campaigned for new blackboards in the Physics building over the course of a year and have been involved in a number of campaigns including the YUSU Bar Campaign, the DISARM campaign, the second member of the Humanitarian Aid for Gaza (York) - Chris asked me to help out and we got it launched - and I also sat on Student Services Subcommittee and argued the case for B Henry's to the university staff.
Plus two NUS national conferences and three or four regional conferences including being one of two in Leeds and the only York delegate to Manchester.
CE: I'm running because I believe I that Jason and I can make a real difference with regards to dealing with issues that matter to students. There are several issues that I feel I should mention but you can read all of our policies on the Facebook group.
The first is that I want to see a resolution to the bridge debacle as soon as possible. Last year the university promised us that they would repair or replace the Vanbrugh-Goodricke bridge and we are still waiting.
Further, there seems to be an apparent injustice in relation to Sports Centre membership. £40 is, as we all know expensive, but it is made worse by the fact that societies such as Snooker Soc have to pay this fee, even though they don't use the sports centre.
Both Jason and I are also keen to look into the ways of making student bars more cost-efficient. The fact that we have a Union bar should in no way damage other facilities on campus; the university needs to ensure that all bars offer competitive prices.
JR: I care about students and feel that they are under-represented. I already do campaigning for the university so it would be good to do it in an official capacity. I will campaign for everything that I'm mandated to, seek student support for all campaigns and get things done.
There aren't many people in the Student Union that have the track-record for YUSU involvement, NUS involvement and campaigning so I feel that I'm a good candidate. Chris and I have worked together on several occasions, represent a range of opinions and will actively support and represent students at higher levels.
CE: I am hard working and keen to make a difference. I will campaign on the issues that matter to students and will assist the other Union officers in whatever ways possible.
JR: We will represent them fairly and actively. We will boost the college Campaigns teams and will have more Campaigns Committees. We will publicise campaigns more effectively and push for what the student wants until we get it. We care about the students, work well together, both have relevant experience and know what we are mandated to do.
CE: Founding and organising the Humanitarian Aid for Gaza (York) campaign which has raised £2500 for the innocent victims of the Israel-Palestine conflict. I was following the news coverage at home over Christmas and thought it would be great to involve York students in a positive and non-partisan campaign, purely aimed at helping those in need.
JR: Raised £2,500 for Gaza victims. Without a shadow of a doubt. Other than that, helped get the YUSU constitution ratified, helped pass the NUS reform, helped get a brilliant student venue, shaped Union policy and been involved with lots of other campaigns that really are both fun to get involved with and physically able to change the university.
CE: Efe's take away food!
JR: Tell you what, Pokémon games are still awesome. Oh yeah.
For further information on policies, check out http://www.kypzethdurron.com (which is a bit lame, I know, but contains a lot of information about policies, potential policies, has our posters on it and has all current Union policy listed too) or email Chris (cje502) or myself (jr543) with questions!
We want to campaign for what students want so if you disagree with a policy, let us know - and if you think something important hasn't been mentioned, do the same
