Know your Part Time Officer: Environment and Ethics

YUSU Environment and Ethics
Wednesday, 11th March 2009
The Yorker speaks to David Clarke and Jade Flahive-Gilbert, who are running for Environment and Ethics Officer unopposed.
  • Relevant experience?

David Clarke and Jade Flahive-Gilbert: We've got involved in as much as possible in our first two terms at York but our most substantial undertaking has been setting up the Oxfam group. With that, we've organised a quiz, a film night and have created a climate change campaign video which involves over fifty people at the university. Other than that, Jade is the climate change campaign coordinator for the university's People and Planet and we've been active in the Gaza activism and the ethical investment campaign. David is chair of the Oxfam's Youth Board.

  • Why are you running?

DC & JFG: We've been dedicated to environmental and ethical causes for as long as we can remember, hence our involvement with Oxfam and People and Planet. We believe that Environment and Ethics should play an important part in the life of the university and that we're in a position to make that happen. It's our YUSU and our university - we're ambitious to achieve high standards.

  • Why should students vote for you?

DC & JFG: We're convinced that we have the enthusiasm and commitment to offer effective representation. Being first years, we may not be able to boast a long list of university responsibilities but we've hit the ground running with the things we've got involved in and can offer new ideas and fresh thinking. We want to raise the profile of environment and ethics on campus with events and socials to get more people involved - the election for this post next year should have the competition it deserves. Like the thousands of students who have signed the petition against the university's investment in the arms trade, we'll work tirelessly for an ethical investment policy. We need to build on the success of recycling and ensure regular collections - you can't expect students to participate in the recycling scheme if the bins are always overflowing.

  • The best thing I've done at uni is...

DC & JFG: 'Oxfam at the University of York' has been a source of pride for us and we're inspired by the enthusiasm and commitment shown by everybody who's involved. One of the great things about coming to university is meeting people who are really passionate about making a difference - it's great to have an opportunity to work together to achieve real change.

  • Guilty pleasure?

DC: Drinking games in the kitchen, then Ziggy's or Tru.

JFG: I'm a massive chocaholic (Fairtrade of course!)
