A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Weir joined the university in 1970 and had been Provost of Derwent since 1982. He was also a Senior Lecturer in the Economics Department.
Pro-Vice Chancellor for Students Jane Grenville said: "This is appalling news and our thoughts are with Ron’s family. Ron was a well-known and longstanding member of the university. Ron was a towering figure in the university in every sense – we will all miss him very much.”
An obituary will appear in the University Magazine and Grapevine, the alumni magazine, and funeral details will be announced shortly.
PVC Jane Grenville, Derwent's Vice-Provost Dr Rob Aitken, and Langwith Provost Dr John Issitt are the points of contact for students and staff in Derwent College.
I remember when I was stewarding a Derwent event once and Ron came and chatted for about 15-20 minutes just to keep my company. Everyone loved him - real legend. I hope Vision headline the story. My thoughts are with his family.
He will be missed greatly.
Ron was an excellent provost, a true gentleman who always fought on the side of the students. I will miss him.
I'm a fresher and only met him a handful of times but I know how much he will be missed in Derwent and the University. Such a sad time for Derwent, the University of York and of course his family.
R.I.P.
Ron would invite every first year student in groups to his house for dinner and was genuinely interested in chatting to them and offering his advice. Such a nice bloke, what a hero.
Ron was one of the first to welcome me to Derwent College and to the University of York. He was always rightly proud of the achievements of Derwent and York students and would always offer his support when asked. I found his knowledge and advice valuable not only as an economics student but as a former JCR member as well. His humour and wit will be sorely missed by all.
He really stood up for the students, Derwent and the collegiate system in general. He will be badly missed by everyone.
God bless Ron Weir.
Many people connected to the college may at this stage be hoping to find out any information or leave messages of condolence. It is therefore hardly appropriate that the JCRC web page looks as it does.
I remember in my first year my whole house from edens was invited round his and he plied us with wine and curry all night, and chatted with every single person in the room at great length. Having been a member of the college JCRC and occasionally on the College committee I was lucky enough to meet Ron on a number of occasions and the Derwent of "my day" will never be the same again.
A great man and an even greater loss to Derwent College. He will be missed by many. Best wishes to the Weir family.
I think all Derwent students remember the 1st year Provost Dinner and JCRC inaugaration where as Greenie said, we were given curry and wine in momentous amounts by Ron and his wife. He always showed a genuine interest in what students spoke to him about and it goes without saying that we was well and truly Derwent College through and through.
On a more personal note, I was in a spot of bother in my first-year and had to pay Ron a visit. On asking what I'd been drinking on this particular night, I mentioned 'cheap Costcutter vodka' at which his let out an almighty sigh of exasperation and suggested I make my way to a local ale-house and steer clear of the "cheaply fermented Russian 'stuff'; and don't touch that euro-fizz [by which I assume he meant lagar] either". What a hero. I shall certainly toast the great man's memory with an ale-in-hand.
I think it's safe to say that all students of Derwent, past and present, will recognise what a sad day week this is for Derwent and obviously for Ron's family. I think it's also safe to say that our thoughts are with them all.

Webmaster of derwent here, I'd like to apologise for leaving the website in an inappropriate state for the last few days. I should have removed the test page as soon as I had finished with it.
